431 Obituary:

Bob (Doc) Shields passed away Friday, March 16th, at the age of 88.

Bob is survived by his wife, Leah Shields of Fredericksburg; children: David Davis & wife Dulce of Santa Fe, TX, Staci Davis of Dallas, Dr. Robert F. Shields & wife Kathy of Plano, Thomas Shields & wife Linda of Sioux Falls, SD, Jim Shields & wife Kim of Spring Branch, TX; grandchildren: Sissiley Smith, Kimberly Shields, D.O., Kelly Didehbani, Ross Shields, Evan Shields, Kristen Shields, Justin Shields, Cody Shields; great grandson, Bennett Robert Barzda & sister, Juel Anderson of CA.

Bob was born February 27, 1924 to parents Grace Edith MacKenzie & Julius Louis Knoerschild. His father was killed in an auto accident when Bob was 2 years old so he went to live with his grandparents Friedrich & Anne Knoerschild until he was 10 years old. Bob eventually shortened his last name to Shields). He treasured them & shared many memories of his grandparents & growing up on Windsor Avenue in Dubuque.

Bob spent the Depression years on a NE Missouri farm * attended school in Kirksville, MO. He graduated from Los Angeles Polytechnic HS in 1942 as his family moved to CA after the start of WWII. He attended USC, joined the Naval Aviation V5 program, & after flight training schools received his wings & commission in December 1944 at Corpus Christi, TX. He chose sea planes & flew the OS2U-3 Kingfisher & finally the SC-1 Sea Hawk which was shot into flight from the USS St. Paul, CA-73, landed in the sea for recovery & hoisted back to the ship. The St. Paul was in training to invade Japan until the capitulation & was along side the USS Missouri at the signing of the peace treaty. He absolutely loved his navy days& flying & would regale any ready listeneer with tales of his adventures, many of which were with Gene Kelly, a ship mate in the aviation division.

Bob entered the University of Iowa in 1946, graduated in 1948, studied medicine at Kirksville Osteopathic Medical School where he was Assistant Professor of Clinical Pathology from the summer of 1950 until he graduated in 1952. Bob established Port Acres Clinic September 1952 in Port Ares, TX (suburb of Port Arthur) where he treated young & old, delivered hundreds of babies, some even at the clinic. His patients loved him! He & a group of DOs built Doctors Hospital in Groves, TX in 1955. He served on the school board of Port Arthur ISD from 1954 to 1965 & is credited with getting Port Acres schools equal funding & consideration from PAISD. He was the team doctor & avid Stephen F Austin fan. Many times he flew coach (and friend) Bob Frederick to scout opponents. Bob's medical practice included his being named 1st Class Aviation Examiner by the FAA, a designation he held until he retired in 1998. He delighted in talking flying with the pilots who received their aviation med exams from him. Bob was also a member of the USS St. Paul Asc. & the US Navy Cruiser Asc.

Another adventure was the Brangus ranch that he established in Woodville, TX. in 1968, where he transformed a piney woods acreage into beautiful grass & hay fields. He spent many hours on his tractor with his faithful dogs following behind. He moved his office to Woodville in 1991 where he gained a loyal following until he "retired" in 1998; he held an active medical license for 60 years. The final move was to Fredericksburg, TX in 1999 where he set out to raise heifers & enjoy the beauty of the Texas Hill Country, residing along Spring Creek.

Bob absolutely loved his medical practice, flying, service in the Navy, cars & his animals. He had enough tales to fill a book. He was very compassionate & his patients loved him & would not see another physician; he probably wrote the book on bedside manner. His patients knew he was on rounds at the hospital as they could hear him whistling down the hall. He was board certified in Family Practice. & was a member of Fredericksburg UMC, AOA, TOMA, ACFP, AOPA (59 years), & NRA.

A memorial service , celebration of his life, will be held Saturday, March 31st, 2 PM, in the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, 1800 N. Llano, Fredericksburg, TX. 78624.

434 Obituary:

Bobby Dale McNew, 70 of Navasota, went to rest and joined his loving wife on October 4th 2020. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 10th at Nobles Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Montgomery officiating.

Born May 5th, 1950, in Big Spring, Texas, he was one of 10 children raised on the farm where they raised cotton, cattle, and hogs.

He was the father of two sons, Thomas McNew and Michael McNew. He was also a proud grandfather to Brent McNew.

He learned how to work hard for a living. He held various jobs from the Motorola Company in Chicago, Illinois, to a feed store in Texas. When he was just 16 years of age, he joined his older brothers, Rex and Billy in the seismic field. He was rapidly promoted to Junior Observer for Western Geophysical. During his time there, he decided that he didn't much like working in the mud and mosquitoes so he quit and moved to Navasota where he met and married Georgia Faye Shine. His first real job in Navasota was working for Alfred Glassell, Jr. as a ranch manager and remained as the manager for over 35 years. During his time on the ranch he became a Grimes County Justice of the Peace for Precincts 3 & 4 where he presided over municipal court until his retirement.

During all these years he made friends with the love of his life. Ranching for the both of them was hard. It was something straight out of the movies; a girl from the city meets the boy from the farm. The work hours were long and there was little time to spare, but Bobby was always willing to lend a hand in the community. He served his community as Justice of the Peace with honor and integrity during his capacity. This was so fulfilling to him; the satisfaction and reward was overwhelming. To this day people in the community always call him Judge Bobby or Judge McNew or just plain Judge. Retirement didn't suit him, and he went back to work again with Western Geophysical and became Party Manager until their closure. Bobby then formed a landman company and held this until his passing. He was able to see the United States while working for a number of years until he decided to fully retire in 2017 and began to travel for leisure. He was a fun seeker in every which way imaginable - seeing several countries and U.S. destinations some of us have only seen in photos. His best friend was his grandson Brent and he would always place a bet that he knew he couldn't win but would still place each time to see who caught the biggest fish - always losing. He had a trip planned to go skiing in Colorado just next week but that was cut short due to complications with his Aortic Aneurysm causing his death.

Bobby was preceded in death by his loving wife Georgia Faye Shine McNew; parents R.X. McNew and Lillie Ruth McNew; brothers Billy McNew, James (Roy) McNew, and Rexie McNew and sister Jean Crowder.

He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Jennifer McNew of San Antonio and Michael McNew of Edinburg and his only grandson, Brent Michael McNew; sisters and brothers-in-law Joy & Robert Howland of Coahoma, Carolyn & Jimmy Rogers of Big Spring, Sharon & Bob Husson of Garland, Barbara and Danny Clark of Coahoma, and sister-in-law Patsy McNew of Athens as well as many other nieces, nephews, and loved family members and friends.

BOLT BRINGS INSTANT DEATH TO LEE HAMLIN

Friend In Automobile Few Feet Away Unhurt; Funeral Thursday

Lee Hamlin, 64, pioneer farmer, was killed instantly by a bolt of lightning at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday as he stepped from a car to direct a visitor back to town.

He was killed near his home thirteen miles north of Big Spring.

Hamlin had been sitting in the automobile with J.H. Kirkpatrick before he stepped from the car and walked to the front of the car to point out the best route back to the city.

"There was a flash and a clap," Kirkpatrick said, "and when I could see again he was lying on the ground in front of the car."

Force of the bolt shredded Mr. Hamlin's hat into scores of pieces. His body was badly burned by the electrical discharge. Mr. Kirkpatrick was unhurt. The bolt came from a small thunder head.

Born in Missouri more than sixty-four years ago, Hamlin had farmed in this county for more than thirty years.

Still very active despite his years, he had been supervising the unloading of posts and wire immediately previous to his death.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Sarah Hamlin, one daughter, Mrs. Roy McNew, and two sons, Monta and Orbie.

Mr. Hamlin also leaves five sisters and one brother. They are R.D. Hamlin of Midland and Mmes. Nora Harrison of Jayton, Will Haynes, Jim Woodie and Jim Crow all of Gorman, and Charles Vandiver of Rogers, N.M. Eight grandchildren survive.

Masonic lodge here will be in charge of services at the graveside. Rev. M.J. Wise of the Church of Christ will speak the last rites for Hamlin from the Eberley Funeral Chapel 10 a.m. Thursday.

BOSSIER CITY, LA - A memorial celebrating the life of Scott Pine will be held Saturday, May 31, 1:30pm at Airline Baptist Church, 4007 Airline Drive, Bossier City.

Scott, 34, was an Orange County, Florida Deputy Sheriff. He was born July 12, 1979 in Shreveport, Louisiana and graduated from Airline High School in 1997. He attended Louisiana Tech where he received his MBA. While there, he met and fell in love with Bridget Roseboom. A short time later they moved to the Orlando area. The couple soon married and, over the years, God blessed them with three beautiful children. After 8 years working in the banking industry, Scott, a man of deep faith, felt called to serve in law enforcement. He joined the Orange County Sheriff's Office in May of 2011 as a Deputy Sheriff on the midnight shift. When not at work, he was often in the park playing with his children or teaching Haley to ride her bike, all of which would be quickly posted to Facebook. He loved to travel and camp with his family. He enjoyed playing games, wrestling, reading, and nighttime prayers with his children. Scott was an avid LSU fan and was dedicated to God, family, friends and co-workers. He worked tirelessly to protect and serve the citizens of Orange County. He epitomized the inscription on his patrol vehicle, "Making A Difference". On February 11, 2014, Deputy Scott Pine was shot and killed while investigating reports of multiple car burglaries. He served his community with honor and dignity. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Bridget Pine, children, Haley, Ryker and Maddox Pine; mother, Donna Pine Robinson and husband, Dr. James Robinson of Bossier City, LA; father, Robert Pine and wife, Terry of Oklahoma; grandmother, Dolores Gibbs; sister, Angela Mills and husband, Chad; sister, Lori Lucas; brother, Charlie Pine; sister-in-law, Denise Purdy and husband, Tyler; brother-in-law, Jeremy Roseboom and wife, Stephanie; mother-in-law, Frances Taylor and husband, Johnny; father-in-law, Jeff Roseboom and wife, Mary; nieces and nephews, Hayden and Parker Mills, Seth Pine, Josie, Zoe and Layla Roseboom and Ethan and Eli Purdy and many other family members.

Because of Scott's love for all things LSU, we are encouraging memorial attendees to wear their LSU gear or purple and gold to celebrate the life of our hero. In memory of Deputy Scott Pine, we ask you to thank a law enforcement officer. When they put on their badge and walk out the door, there is no guarantee they will return home to their family.
