      Dr. Shepperd

      Dr. James Nolen Shepperd, 64, assistant professor of English at Texas A&M University, died of an apparent heart attack at noon Thursday as he walked across campus.

      An A&M faculty member since 1941, Shepperd specialized in teaching English to foreign students. He taught a year at Allen Academy before moving to A&M.

      Shepperd was personal secretary to Congressman Lindley Beckworth of Gladewater in 1939. Earlier, he taught in high schools at Gladewater, Naples, and Hughes Springs.

      A native of Big Sandy, Shepperd earned B.A. and M.S. degrees in English at the University of Texas.

      He had served as counselor with Life Magazine in New York.

      He was active in the First Christian Church, and was a past chairman of the board.

      His widow, Mrs. Willie May Shepperd, is class secretary for the A&M Association of Former Students.

      Survivors include his widow; stepsons, Maj. William Sidney Carr of Abilene and John K. Carr of Beaumont; four brothers, Charles E. Shepperd of Bryan, Hollie H. Shepperd of Garland, Wayne Sheppperd of Longview and Norton Shepperd of Huntington Beach, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Rex Harris, Oklahoma City, Okla., and five step grand-children.

      Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Calloway Jones Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Jimmy Hayes of First Christian Church will conduct the services with burial in Bryan City Cemetery.

      Pallbearers will be Joe Glass, Jess Henton, Ralph Britton, Dr. Earl Middleton, Arlen Crouch, and Tom Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the English Department at A&M. Other honorary pallbearers will be Richard Weirus, Jow Buser, Billy Pickard, Dr. Carl Lyman, L. B. Locke, Dr. T. T. Walton, O. J. Moss, G. E. Madeley, and G. E. Adams, J. B. Hervey, and E. E. McQuillan.

      J. N. Shepperd's Rites In Bryan

      Funeral services for J. N. Shepperd, 64, native of Big Sandy who was an English professor at A&M University for the past 25 years, will be held in the First Christian Church in Bryan at 10 a.m. Saturday.

      Shepperd, who was the brother of W. W. Shepperd of Longview, collapsed at noon Wednesday while he was walking across the campus with some students. He died en route to a hospital.

      Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Shepperd, Big Sandy merchants, Shepperd had taught school in Gladewater, Hughes Springs, Naples and at Allen's Academy before becoming associated with the university.

      He is survived by his wife, Willie Mae Sheppard; two step- sons; a sister and three other brothers.
