    Obituary:

SHREVEPORT, LA - "Come!" The Heavenly Father embraced His beloved daughter, Lucy Ethel Houston Perkins, 71, as she went to be with Him and other family members awaiting her in His eternal Presence, Saturday morning, October 28, 2000.

Working with children was her greatest love. She loved all of them and invested 50 years in their welfare. Lucy could plumb the depths of their dilemmas, unlock their fragile minds and flood their souls with the light of knowledge and the love of God. She could challenge the brightest to incredible heights of learning and pull the poorer students from their places of low self-esteem and cause them to walk confidently. She was a master of the Montessori method of teaching and mothered the movement in Louisiana. She was founder and principal of the following schools: East Haven Baptist 1957-1960; Young World 1960-1963 (both in Houston, TX), Montessori School for Shreveport 1963-1978; New Life Montessori 1978-1983; LaFollo Reading Tutoring Program 1983-1987 and Christian Center School 1987-1996. Following many months of illness, Lucy walked into the church sanctuary Sunday morning, a week ago and exclaimed to the congregation, "It's wonderful to be with my family again." She and Otis, her partner in marriage for 53 years, prayed at the altar as she led what would be her final public prayer. Lucy spent most of her life championing peace between races and religions.

Special appreciation is extended to the entire staff of Willis-Knighton Medical Center for their care and personal attention.

Family members celebrating her life include, husband Otis; children, Dan and Pam; grandchildren, Jonathan and Kristina; great-granddaughter, Lillian; and sisters, Elaine Akins; Esther Beeman; and Carolyn Hermes along with numerous nieces and nephews whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rose-Neath Southside Chapel, where services will be also held Wednesday morning at 11:30 a.m. Officiating will be Dr. Billy McCormack, pastor of University Worship Center, where Lucy was a faithful member for 19 years. Rev. Buford Cain of Leesville, long time friend will assist. She will be laid to rest at the Stonewall Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Keith Perkins, Dr. Ronnie Hermes, John D. Graham, III, Michael Perkins, Roger Wurtele and Jim Lacobee.

In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been established in Lucy's name, so that her legacy of teaching will continue.

Please send contributions to University Christian Prep, 4800 Old Mooringsport Rd., Shreveport, LA 71107.
