    LINDEN, VA - Colonel (Ret.) Charles Christopher (Chuck) Sava, of Linden, Virginia and Zwolle, Louisiana, died at home, in the company of his family, on January 5, 2013, at the age of 78, from complications related to Parkinson's Disease. He was born on May 14, 1934 in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Joseph A. Sava, Sr. and Pauline Wolk Sava, and was one of ten children.

    Charles attended St. Vincent's Elementary School, St. John's High School, and then graduated from Fair Park High School in Shreveport, LA, in 1952. His military career began in 1953 with the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. In 1955, he accepted an appointment as a Midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy. He joined the Louisiana National Guard and was the Honor Graduate of Officer Candidate School in Ft. Benning, GA. He later joined the New Jersey National Guard, where he earned the Meritorious Service Award after serving nearly twenty years. He retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

    He earned his B.A. degree at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA, in 1960. He then taught for one year at the newly opened Woodlawn High School in Shreveport.

    Charles began a successful 28-year career with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service as a Border Patrol Agent in Presidio, TX, in 1961. He was the Deputy Regional Commissioner in Dallas, TX, and held positions as Associate Commissioner of Procurement, Associate Commissioner of Management, and Associate Commissioner of Enforcement in Washington, D.C. He retired as the INS District Director of New York in 1989.

    Chuck's achievements and honors were many, but he was most proud of his family.

    He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois Crnkovic Sava, six children; Donna Moser and her husband Dan, of Linden, VA, Kenneth Sava and his wife Jennifer, of Fairfax Station, VA, Stanley Sava and his wife Donna, of Seaford, DE, Amanda Clopton and her husband Steve, of Boone, NC, Teresa Sava of Linden, VA, and Felice Hilton of Bristow, VA, and eight grandchildren; Blake, Ryan and wife Mackenzie, and Colin Harris, Amanda and Natalie Sava, Griffin Sava, and Stephanie and Will Hilton. Also surviving are brothers James and wife Carol Sava of Kalama, WA, Bernard Sava of Denver, CO, Harold and wife Dreama Sava of Texarkana, TX, and Steve and wife Ceci Sava of Hot Springs, AR, and sister Mary Sava of Texarkana, TX. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Joseph Jr., Paul, and David, and sister Theresa.

    Services will be held in Front Royal, VA, with visitation at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice of Winchester, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA, 22601.
