    Obituary:

    Mr. James Thomas Vessels, Jr., age 62 of Whitney, passed away Friday, January 1, 2016. He was born May 25, 1953 in Ennis, Texas, son of the late James Thomas and Illa Claudette Martin Vessels, Sr. He grew up and attended schools in Ennis before enlisting with the United States Navy. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked in the Oil Industry for several years. "Junior," as he was called by family and friends, then became a self employed handyman. He was skilled in carpentry, landscaping and could fix just about anything that was broken. He moved to the Whitney area in the early nineties and enjoyed fishing whenever he had time. He also loved listening to country music. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of American Legion Post 522. Also preceding him in death were three uncles, Arthur Cecil Vessels, Robert Lynn Vessels and David Reese Martin and one aunt, Annetta Wickliff. Survivors include three sisters, Jackie Frazier and husband Luke, Jean Brown and husband Randy and Annetta Kay Horn; two brothers, John David Vessels and Gary Lynn Vessels and numerous nieces and nephews. Viewing and visitation with family and friends will be held Tuesday, January 5 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Cornerstone Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date.

    Mrs. Claudette Martin Flaherty, 71, of Hillsboro passed away Sunday, February 11, 2007. She was born September 11, 1935, in Hillsboro, daughter of Claude Lester and Illa Mae Seay Martin, where she grew up and attended schools.

    She married Alphonse Flaherty August 15, 1980.

    She was an Avon salesperson before becoming a full-time mother raising her children.

    She then was employed in the cafeteria department at Hill College for the next 21 years until her retirement in 1998.

    She enjoyed visiting with people and attending garage sales.

    She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church of Hillsboro, Catholic Daughters of Mary Court #2123 and Hillsboro Senior Circle.

    Survivors include: her husband, Alphonse Flaherty of Hillsboro; three sons, James and John Vessels, both of Whitney and Gary Vessels and wife, Karen, of Milford; two daughters, Kay Horn of Whitney and Jean Brown and husband, Randy, of Peoria; one stepson, Alphonse Flaherty Jr. of Temple; one stepdaughter, Patricia Cowan of Valley Mills; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her faithful K-9 companion, Daisy.

    Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, 2007, at Cornerstone Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsboro.

    Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Hillsboro with Father Alberto Bueno serving as celebrant.

    Pallbearers were Jerry Vessels, Jason Vessels, Steven Flaherty, Joseph Greninger, Milton Flaherty, and Johnny Ray Neagle.
