    Obituary:

    Jimmy Lee Newsom, 80, died February 7, 2012 in Big Spring. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday February 10, 2012 at Trinity Baptist Church with Dr Randy Cotton and Rev Wade Cobb nephew officiating.

    The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday February 9, 2012 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

    Jimmy was born on January 1, 1932 in Brownfield, Texas. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1950 and entered the U.S. Air Force where he served from 1950 to 1954. In 1953 he married Georgie Harrison his wife of 58 years. He then attended Howard College.

    During his life Jimmy co owned Newsom-Shaffer Construction raised cotton and retired from Fina. He also played an active part in helping the Big Spring community, volunteering with Christmas in April, Meals on Wheels, Festival of Lights and Keep Big Spring Beautiful. He was awarded the "Paul Harris" award by the Rotary Club one of the organization's highest honors.

    Jimmy was also a dedicated member of his church. He served as a deacon at Trinity Baptist Church for 38 years. He also spent many years teaching in the Junior High Sunday School Department.

    Though he loved and played all sports he was an avid golfer. He won the Big Spring City Championship several years and he has 10 hole in ones on record. He had many golf friends and he often played with his family.

    Survivors include his wife Georgie Newsom of Big Spring; his daughter Tammy DePauw and husband Jim of Big Spring; his son Jimmy Newsom Jr and wife, Irene, of Big Spring; three granddaughters Alex Newsom of Lubbock, Regan Newsom of Lubbock and Darby DePauw of Big Spring; three sisters Nancy Phernetton and husband Gus of Big Spring, Pennie Leimire and husband, Clay of North Highland, California, Marilyn Grigg and husband Walter of Houston; three brothers Bob Newsom and wife Donna of Midland, Donald Newsom and wife Kay of Amarillo and Tommy Newsom and wife Sherry of Big Spring; four step-grandchildren: Branden Halfmann of Ballinger, Katelin Steadman of Midland, Callie Williams of Big Spring and Tara Williams of Abilene; and by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

    Welcoming him to Heaven will be his parents Evelyn and R.L. Newsom; brother Kenneth Newsom; sister Juanita Adams and her husband Bill; and granddaughter Dorre DePauw.
