Wayne Joseph Hermes 87, of Shreveport, died at home of natural causes on January 11, 2017. He grew up in Shreveport and after graduating from Fair Park High School, began working as a union glass cutter at Libbey Owens Ford, where his father, brothers, and grandfather had worked since the turn of the century. He worked there for twenty-five years. He subsequently enjoyed a lengthy corporate career for Church's Fried Chicken, Inc. learning the business from the ground up as an assistant store manager and store manager. He retired to Longview, Texas in 1989 and purchased two Church's franchises which he sold in 1996.

He and his wife, Carolyn Virginia Houston of Shreveport, were married in 1948. They were active parishioners at several Catholic churches in Shreveport (St. Theresa, Sacred Heart, and St. John's Cathedral) as well as in Monroe LA, Houston, and Longview. At St. Matthew's in Longview they were daily communicants and devoted supporters of the parish Adoration Chapel. They were also dedicated to the service of the poor and other charitable activities in the parish.

In retirement they traveled the country extensively, often by RV, including a lengthy trip to Alaska. They also visited Mexico, Italy, and Switzerland. Particularly important to them were the numerous trips around the country to visit their children and grandchildren, especially for their many first communions, confirmations, and graduation ceremonies. They moved back to Shreveport in February 2015.
