    Shreveport, LA - Services celebrating the life of Dr. Newell Osteen Pugh Sr. will be held at First Baptist Church Sanctuary Shreveport, Louisiana at 11:00 am Saturday March 28, 2009. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Friday March 27, 2009 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A reception for family and friends will be held at the church prior to the service on Saturday March 28, 2009 at 10:00 am. Officiating will be Dr. Jon Stubblefield Pastor of Main Street Baptist Church of Hattiesburg, MS, assisted by Dr. Pugh's grandson Rev. Stephen Fife Associate Pastor of Asbury UMC, Lafayette, LA.

    Dr. Pugh was born September 1, 1916 in DeSoto Parish, LA. He passed away at the age of 92 on March 25, 2009 at Grace Home Shreveport after a lengthy illness. He was a long time resident of Shreveport loved and admired by all who knew him.

    He is preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Elizabeth Smith Pugh, his parents Stephen Sr. and
    Grace Pugh, one brother Stephen Pugh Jr. and two sisters, Viola Pugh and Margaret Ashbaugh.

    He is survived by his wife Jo Noble Pugh; his children, Dr. Newell Pugh Jr. and wife Marie of Indianapolis, IN; Dr. Viola Miller and husband Richard of Nashville, TN; Beth Fife and husband Lester of Ruston, LA; stepchildren Carol Noble and husband Ken Nirenberg of Austin, TX; Melanie Ewell, J.D. and husband Michael of Cabot, AR; Marilyn C. Noble, J.D. and husband Richard Arnold of New Orleans, LA; and Dr. Paul Noble Jr. and wife Lisa of Benton, AR; brother Orie Lee Pugh and wife Nancy of Barton, FL; 7 grandchildren; 9 step grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; and 8 step great grandchildren; and numerous relatives and friends.

    Dr. Pugh attended Northwestern State University; University of Tennessee; and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 1982 from Louisiana College, Pineville, LA. He was ordained at First Baptist Church in 1950 and was pastor of Levy Street and Robinson Place Missions of the First Baptist Church, Shreveport, LA. from 1946-1982. He was Minister to Senior Adults at First Baptist
    Church and served as chaplain of Nurse Care and Guest Care South Park for 12 years. He was employed by Dixie Mill Supply Company from 1938-1951 as office manager and buyer and Norvell-Wilder Supply Company farom 1951-1978 as sales representative. Dr. Pugh served as a member of the Price Control Board for Machinery during WWII and received a letter of thanks from the President of the United States.

    During his lengthy career, he had served on the executive board of Louisiana Baptist Association. He was a member of Shreveport Ministerial Alliance; Interfaith Committee for Human Dignity and Social Justice; advisory board for LSU Extension Department; advisory board Quality Care Association; Southern Home Care, and member of Southern Association of Applied Gerontology. Dr. Pugh was a 32nd degree Mason, Queensborough Lodge since 1943.

    Active pallbearers include Jody Blackwell, Jimmy Brooks, William Sanders, Wayne Sanders, Chuck McInturf, and Richard Blue. Honorary pallbearers include Merwin McMahen, Bill Tebow, John Shaw, Art Magart, Wayne Blue, Johnny Blackwell, Jim Brooks, Harold Sanders, and Roger Robinson.

    SHREVEPORT, LA - Services for Gladys Elizabeth Smith Pugh will be held at 2:00p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 1998 in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Shreveport with Dr. Jon Stubblefield, pastor of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Park Cemetery on St. Vincent Avenue. The family will receive friends between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 28, 1998 at the Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street.

    Mrs. Gladys Smith Pugh, a nurse, a devoted wife and christian helpmate to Dr. N.O. Pugh, Sr., loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and longtime resident of Shreveport died Saturday, December 26, 1998 at the Grace Home after a lengthy illness. The couple had just celebrated their 59th Anniversary on November 23, 1998. Mrs. Pugh was born August 6, 1911 in a small town near York, Alabama. After graduation from high school, she entered the Highland School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. She was working as an industrial nurse at a cannery on Kings Highway when she met N.O. Pugh. They were married and established residence in Shreveport where they raised three children and she assisted in his christian ministry at Levy Street Baptist Mission, Robinson Place Baptist Mission and First Baptist Church of Shreveport.

    She is survived by her husband, Rev. N.O. Pugh, Sr.; Dr. Newell Pugh, Jr., and wife Marie of Indianapolis, IN, daughter, Dr. Viola Miller and husband Rusty of Murray, KY; daughter, Beth Fife and husband Lester of Shreveport, LA; seven grandchildren, Becky Iovino and husband Tony, Cindy Pugh, Sarah Pugh, Ashley Willis, Trey Miller, Stephen Fife and wife Marny, Grace Fife; two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Anthony Iovino; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

    Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Stephen Fife, and Trey Miller; sons-in-laws, Lester Fife, Rusty Miller; nephew, Jerry Smith; and great-nephew; Eddie Hoyle.

    The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at Grace Home and Schumpert Hospice Care for their care and attention to Mrs. Pugh and her family.

    Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Shreveport or to Grace Home.

    SAREPTA, LA - Services for Mr. Stephen B. Pugh, Sr., 95, of Sarepta, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday Sept. 15 at the New Sarepta Baptist Church, where he was a member and deacon. The Rev. Richard May will officiate. Burial: Old Sarepta Cemetery. Plans are under the direction of Bailey Mortuary of Springhill, La.

    He died Tuesday Sept. 13, 1983, in Springhill. Mr. Pugh, a native of the Friendship Community in DeSoto Parish, La. and a resident of Sarepta for 55 years, was retired from International Paper Co. and was a retired farmer.

    He is survived by three sons, Dr. N.O. Pugh, Sr. of Shreveport, Stephen B. Pugh, Jr. of Sarepta and Orie Lee Pugh of Lake Wales, Fla.; one daughter, Margaret Ashbaugh of Blue Springs, Kansas; eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

    Mrs. Pugh, a native and lifelong resident of the Sarepta area, died Wednesday Feb. 2, 1983, in Springhill. She was an active member and Sunday school teacher at New Sarepta Baptist Church, was active in the Southern Baptist Missionary Association, and taught school in the public schools at Logansport.

    She is survived by her husband, Stephen B. Pugh, Sr. of Sarepta; three sons, Dr. N.O. Pugh, Sr. of Shreveport, Stephen B. Pugh, Jr. of Sarepta, and Orie Lee Pugh of Lake Wales, Fla.; a daughter, Margaret Ashbaugh of Blue Springs, Kan.; a sister, Gertie Cochran of Sarepta; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

    Lazarus L. Houston, 84-year old pioneer resident of this section and the head of a large and prominent North Louisiana family, died at his home near Sarepta, La. Mr. Houston was born near Cuthbert, Randolph County, Ga. The son of Samuel T. and Esther Martin Houston. He was the sixth of a family of 13 children. When a boy he moved with his parents to Webster Parish, La., where they settled on a homestead tract near Sarepta. There his mother gave the name Sarepta to the town that sprang up near their home. Mr. Lazarus L. (Lat) remained until his death on the Houston homestead where he and his wife reared a large family. He was married March 16, 1871, to Fannie Viola Campbell. His wife and ten children survive him. He was a devout member of the Baptist Church."

    Children: G. O. Houston, Lonnie, I. N., Vester, Mrs. Egan Hodges, of Shreveport, La.; Mrs. Ban Pugh and Lee, of Sarepta; Mrs.. Porter Cochran, of Springhill; Dr. W. M.     PIONEER WOMAN DIES AT SAREPTA

    Mother of Local Resident Dies After Illness of One Month.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Campbell Houston, 76, widow of the late L.L. Houston, were held Saturday afternoon at Sarepta, Webster parish. Mrs. Houston, who is the mother of G.O. Houston, assistant superintendent of Caddo parish schools, died Friday afternoon at her home near Sarepta. Mrs. Houston was the mother of 16 children, 10 of who survive her.

    Mrs. Houston's husband died four months ago. Mr. and Mrs. Houston were pioneer residents of Webster parish. Mrs. Houston became ill a month ago and her death was expected.

    Mrs. Houston was Miss Fannie Viola Campbell. She was born at Rocky Mount, Bossier parish, Sept. 1, 1854. She was married March 16, 1871.

    Survivors are the following sons and daughters: Dr. W.M. Houston, El Dorado, Ark.; I.N., L., G.O. and V.E. Houston, all of Shreveport; Lee L. Houston, Sarepta; Mrs. J.F. Adkins, Cotton Valley, La.; Mrs. G.E. Hodges, Shreveport; Mrs. Porter Cochran, Sarepta; Mrs. S.B. Pugh, Sarepta. A brother, the Rev. T.M. Campbell, of Shongaloo, 43 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive.

    Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Joel McCann at the Sarepta Baptist church where Mrs. Houston was a member.
