    Funeral services for Mr. Melbourne Lewis Cochran, 84, were held Sunday, October 12, 2003 at 2:00 pm at Central Baptist Church in Springhill; Dr. Ron Harvey officiating. Burial followed in the Plain Dealing Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary of Springhill, La.

    Mr. Cochran was born October 20, 1918 in Springhill, La. to Porter and Gertrude Houston Cochran and went to be with his Lord on October 10, 2003 in Longview, Tx. He was a native and life long resident of Springhill, La. where he lived until recently moving to Longview, Tx. He attended Springhill schools, married Nettie Hazel Covington of Chalybeate Springs, La., July 19, 1941, he was drafted into the Army during WWII, was self-employed in several business ventures including Logging and the Dairy and Egg industries. Also, was a long time and devoted member, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Central Baptist Church in Springhill.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, J.L. Cochran and infant son, Stanley Lewis Cochran.

    He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nettie Hazel Covington Cochran of Chalybeate Springs, La.; daughter, Candace Cochran Stahl and husband Lewis P. Stahl of Longview, Tx.; two grandchildren, Gavin Lewis Stahl and wife, Kristin, of Longview, Tx., Melissa Michonne Stahl Vela and her husband, Rick, of Waco, Tx.; five great-grandchildren, Madison, Abigail, and Emily Stahl and Greyson and Adeline Vela; sisters, Maggie Cochran Wallace and Gertie Ann Cochran Twitty, both of Springhill, La.

    Pallbearers were the Deacons of Central Baptist Church.

    Services for Nettie Covington Cochran, 90 will be 2:00 Saturday April 2nd at the Chapel of Bailey Mortuary of Springhill, with the Rev. Tim Everett officiating. Burial will follow at Plain Dealing Cemetery of Plain Dealing Louisiana. Mrs. Cochran went to be with her Lord on Thursday evening March 24, 2011 at Good Shepherd Medical Center of Longview Texas. Nettie was born March 10, 1921 in Chalybeate Springs, Louisiana to Marcus and Mamie Covington. She was a long time member of Central Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, GAs and worked with the youth. Her family was her life, and she loved cooking and caring for her children, two grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Melbourne Cochran; an infant son Stanley Lewis; her parents; four brothers and one sister. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Candy and Lewis Stahl of Longview Texas; grandchildren Gavin Stahl and his wife Kristin of Longview Texas, Michonne Vela and her husband Rick of Waco Texas; great grandchildren Greyson Vela, Madison Stahl, Adeline Vela, Abigail Stahl and Emily Stahl. The family will receive visitors at 1:00 on Saturday, April the 2nd at Bailey Mortuary.     PORTERVILLE, LA - Services for Mr. Porter Cochran, 87, of Portersville were held at 4 p.m., Sunday, September 23, at the Central Baptist Church in Springhill, La., where he was a member and deacon. Dr. Johnny Adkins, assisted by Dr. Newell Pugh, officiated. Burial was in the Springhill Cemetery.

    He died Saturday, September 22, 1984, at his residence after a long illness. Mr. Cochran, a native and life long resident of this area, was a major supplier of lumber for the early salt mill industry in Springhill. He worked as a dairyman and poultry farmer in the settlement that came to be called Porterville after him. He was known as (Mr. Porter) to all his friends and acquaintances.

    Mr. Cochran is survived by his wife, Gertrude Houston Cochran; two daughters, Maggie Evelyn Wallace and Gertie Ann Twitty, all of Porterville; one son, Melbourne Cochran of Springhill; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.

    Pallbearers were: Galvin L. Stahl, Louis Stahl, Jerry Voss, Danny Stanford, John Wallace, James Evans and David Twitty.

    Honorary Pallbearers were: deacons of Central Baptist Church in Springhill.

    SPRINGHILL (Porterville), LA - Services for Gertrude Frances Cochran, 93, will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, July 15, 1989 at the Central Baptist Church. Dr. Lynn Jones, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Dr. N.O. Pugh of Shreveport. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary in Springhill.

    Mrs. Cochran, a native and lifelong resident of this area, passed away Friday, July 14, 1989 in Springhill after a short illness. She was the daughter of the late Lazarus L. and Frances Viola Campbell Houston, a pioneer family of Webster Parish. She was the youngest and last survivor of sixteen children. Mrs. Cochran was a homemaker and a member of Central Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and in the choir.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Porter Cochran of September 22, 1984.

    She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Melbourne and Nettie Cochran; two daughters and sons-in-law, Maggie and John Wallace, Gertieann and Billy Twitty; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

    Pallbearers will be Curtis Nichols, Joe Curtis, Robert Bryan, Jerry Nash, Kenneth Treece and Ferrell Sivils.

    Lazarus L. Houston, 84-year old pioneer resident of this section and the head of a large and prominent North Louisiana family, died at his home near Sarepta, La. Mr. Houston was born near Cuthbert, Randolph County, Ga. The son of Samuel T. and Esther Martin Houston. He was the sixth of a family of 13 children. When a boy he moved with his parents to Webster Parish, La., where they settled on a homestead tract near Sarepta. There his mother gave the name Sarepta to the town that sprang up near their home. Mr. Lazarus L. (Lat) remained until his death on the Houston homestead where he and his wife reared a large family. He was married March 16, 1871, to Fannie Viola Campbell. His wife and ten children survive him. He was a devout member of the Baptist Church."

    Children: G. O. Houston, Lonnie, I. N., Vester, Mrs. Egan Hodges, of Shreveport, La.; Mrs. Ban Pugh and Lee, of Sarepta; Mrs.. Porter Cochran, of Springhill; Dr. W. M.     PIONEER WOMAN DIES AT SAREPTA

    Mother of Local Resident Dies After Illness of One Month.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Campbell Houston, 76, widow of the late L.L. Houston, were held Saturday afternoon at Sarepta, Webster parish. Mrs. Houston, who is the mother of G.O. Houston, assistant superintendent of Caddo parish schools, died Friday afternoon at her home near Sarepta. Mrs. Houston was the mother of 16 children, 10 of who survive her.

    Mrs. Houston's husband died four months ago. Mr. and Mrs. Houston were pioneer residents of Webster parish. Mrs. Houston became ill a month ago and her death was expected.

    Mrs. Houston was Miss Fannie Viola Campbell. She was born at Rocky Mount, Bossier parish, Sept. 1, 1854. She was married March 16, 1871.

    Survivors are the following sons and daughters: Dr. W.M. Houston, El Dorado, Ark.; I.N., L., G.O. and V.E. Houston, all of Shreveport; Lee L. Houston, Sarepta; Mrs. J.F. Adkins, Cotton Valley, La.; Mrs. G.E. Hodges, Shreveport; Mrs. Porter Cochran, Sarepta; Mrs. S.B. Pugh, Sarepta. A brother, the Rev. T.M. Campbell, of Shongaloo, 43 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive.

    Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Joel McCann at the Sarepta Baptist church where Mrs. Houston was a member.
