Services For Leo "Crip" Clement Held

Funeral services for Leo "Crip" Clement, 82, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in Rayne Cemetery.

Gossen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Clement died at the Rayne Guest Home at 2:25 a.m. Friday after a recent illness.

He was a native of Acadia Parish and had spent his entire lifetime here. He had served as a member of the Rayne Volunteer Firemen's Association, and was widely known throughout this area as the former grounds keeper and bus driver for the Rayne Ricebirds when this community had a professional baseball team in the Evangeline League years ago. The late Lozen Leger served as presdent of the ball club, and "Crip" was an ardent fan, being not only grounds and club house custodian, but also a close friend and aide to the young men who came to Rayne as a farm of the Chicago White Sox to begin their professional careers.

Baseball remained his interest, even after the Ricebirds were no longer in existence, and he retained many close friendships with his "boys" after they left Rayne.

"Crip" vividly remembered those exciting Evangeline League days, and he had many stories to tell of road trips when he drove the team around "Hot Pepper" League circuit - as well as experiences here at home when baseball was "tops" in sports.

He will also be remembered for the years he was a part-owner of the Farmers' Cafe, a wooden structure located near where Russell's Furniture Mart is now on South Adams Ave.

We always numbered "Crip" among our most sincere friends, and his passing brings to an end an era of baseball enthusiasm and the comradeship of team support for the Ricebirds which brought about record percentage attendances for Rayne, then rated as the smallest town in professional baseball.

Acadian-Tribune joins in the many expressions of sympathy and regret being voiced at his passing.

Survivors include one son, Edward Clement of California; two brothers, Beauregard Clement and Louis Clement, both of Rayne, two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Hebert of Abbeville and Mrs. Otis Nunez of Port Arthur, Texas, and two grandchildren, Richard and Edward.
