    Herman Knouse was born November 5, 1928 to Herman Joseph Knouse and Ruth Bell Barrett Knouse in LeCompte, Louisisana. He was their only child. Herman died peacefully November 21, 2009 at his home in Livingston. Funeral services will be held Tuesday November 24, 2009 at Central Baptist Church in Livingston with Rev. Joel Salazar and Rev. Barry Jeffries officiating. Burial will follow in the Restland Memorial Park.

    Herman grew up in Zwolle, Louisiana graduating from high school in 1945. He then attended LSU in Baton Rouge graduating in 1949 with a B.S. in Forestry. Herman met Anita at the Baptist Student Union on the campus of LSU while they were students. Upon graduation in June of 1949, Herman worked as a Parish Forester in Homer, LA. Anita graduated in January of 1950and there were married February 10, 1950 at the First Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. Herman worked over a year for International Paper Company. In march of 1951, their first daughter Ruth Anita, was born. Herman began his career with Champion Papers on December 18, 1951 and in March of 1953, Herman and Anita moved to Livingston. One mother later, in April, their second daughter, Nancy, was born. Ann was born two years later, and Tom, their only son was born in April of 1957.

    As a forester, Herman managed timberland, worked in research, and retired as Land Acquisition and Exchange Manager. During his professional career Herman worked tirelessly to implement excellence in timerland management and acquisition of timberland for Champion International Corporation. He retired after 43 years with Champion on December 31, 1994.

    Thru the years Herman was active in the Lion''s Club, coached Little League, and worked with the Boy Scouts. Herman worked with Anita on Community Blood Drives and rarely missed an opportunity to help those in need.

    Herman was committed member of Central Baptist Church. He served as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Deacon, and Trustee. He truly believed and lived each day: ...they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

    He is survived by his loving wife Anita Inez Heath Knouse, daughter and husband Nancy Lee Knouse Helton and husband Tommy, granddaughter and husband Jessica Helton Duireden and husband Joe, granddaughter Anita Ruth Helton, great granddaughters Ashanti Duirden, Kristin Smith, great grandson Joe Nathan Duirden III, daughter Sally Ann Knouse McClain, granddaughter and husband Katherine McClain Blackburn and husband Jim, great granddaughters Lauren Elizabeth Voss, Emily Ann Voss, great grandsons Black Culwell Voss and Talon Alexander Blackburn, granddaughter and husband Amelia McClain and husband West Grantom, grandson Daniel Bradley McClain, son and wife Thomas (Tom) Lloyd Knouse and wife Dana, and granddaughters Jill Danielle Knouse, and Paige Lyndsay Knouse.

    Herman Knouse, 70, of Zwolle, died at his home, Friday, March 18, at 2:30 a.m., after a short illness.

    Funeral services were held Saturday, March 19, at 2 p.m., in the Zwolle First Baptist church, with the Rev. Lee Dickson officiating. Burial was in the Zwolle Cemetery, under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home.

    Surviving Mr. Knouse are his widow, Mrs. Ruth Knouse of Zwolle; one son, Herman Knouse Jr. of Livingston, Tex.; one brother, Frank Knouse of Olla; two sisters, Mrs. J. D. Bradley of Huntsville, Tex., and Mrs. H. H. Hensen of Urania, La.; and three grandchildren.

    Pallbearers were Woodrow Salter, James Salter, Jim Graves, Sherman Tatum, John Patton, Fred Roberson, Bill Hopkins, and Doyle Dewitt.

    Mrs. Ruth Bell Knouse, 81, of Zwolle, died in the Sabine Medical Center on May 23, 1985, at 5:14 p.m.

    Funeral services were held in the First Baptist Church of Zwolle on Saturday, May 25, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Lee Dickson officiating. Interment was in the Zwolle Cemetery, under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home of Many.

    Mrs. Knouse is survived by one son, Herman Knouse Jr. of Livingston, Tex.; three grandchildren, Nancy Helton of Conroe, Tex., Tommy Knouse of LaPorte, Tex., and Ann McClain of Richmond, Tex.; and five great grandchildren.

    Pallbearers were Jim Graves, James Q. Salter, John Patton Sr., Sherman Tatum, Jack Napier, and John Loring.

    Mrs. Knouse was a retired school teacher, having taught in the Zwolle schools for 45 years; a very active member of the Zwolle First Baptist Church, having served as Sunday School Superintendent, Training Union Director, Vacation Bible School Director, a very active member in the WMU, and a teacher in all departments of the church.

    She was also a member of the Sabine Parish Retired Teachers Association, 8th District Retired Teachers Association, and the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association. She was the founder of the Sabine Parish PSI Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and held many offices of these organizations. She also was Co-Chairman of the first Tamale Fiesta Scrap Book.

    Mrs. Knouse was the first woman member of the Zwolle Planning Commission; member of the Zwolle Civic Club; member of Zwolle Cemetery Committee; was listed as the outstanding Educator of Delta Kappa Gamma; and was a very active President in the Sabine Parish Teacher's Association during her active teaching. She served as a Senior Sponsor for many years.

    In 1963, the yearbook "The Hawk's Flight" of the Zwolle High School was dedicated to Mrs. Knouse, with the following statement:

    "We, the Senior Class of 1963, with deep respect and admiration, dedicate this year's edition of the Hawk's Flight to a teacher who is a living symbol of all Zwolle High School stands for. Her inspired teaching of the last 34 years has imported knowledge to hundreds who will never forget her. It is with appreciative hearts that we Seniors dedicate this, our yearbook, to you Mrs. Ruth Knouse."

    Mrs. Knouse loved her community, church, and friends, and she served wherever she was needed.

    Last rites for Mrs. Pauline K. Knouse, 66, who passed away Friday, Jan. 6 at Zwolle was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8 at the First Baptist church Zwolle, with Elder E. H. Lehnhoff of Shreveport officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of Warren Funeral Home.

    Surviving relatives are sons, Frank and Hermon J. Knouse, both of Zwolle; daughters, Mrs. S. D. Bradley of Victoria, Texas; Mrs. H. H. Henson of Urania, brother, Anthony E. Kezerle of Zwolle; sisters, Mrs. Sophie Ozbolt of Wisconsin, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.
