    • Obituary:

"The good and the wise lead quiet lives."
      --Euripides, ancient Greek philosopher

A good man of few words, Curtis Gene Schultz passed away on Friday, May 20, 2016, at age 71. He was our beloved husband, father and grandfather, and we already miss him dearly.

Born in Lyons, TX, on July 3, 1944, to Herman W. Schultz and Alvina Poehl Schultz, Curtis grew up in Lyons and Somerville as his mother and father worked their family farm. He was the youngest in a family with much older siblings, including his two brothers and two sisters: Herman W. Schultz Jr. (and wife Dene, both now deceased), Edwin Schultz (and wife Delphine), Esther Schultz Kizer (and husband Emil, both now deceased), and Mavis Schultz Outlaw (and husband Lloyd, now deceased). A solitary boy, Curtis spent his youth mostly outside, fishing or hunting squirrels and rabbits in addition to communing with God through nature. But he wasn't always an angel, and he liked a challenge, such as during his time at Somerville High School, when he once climbed the rock wall on the side of the football stadium-on a dare-in order to relieve himself.

After graduation, Curtis went to work for the railroad, then later found employment as a Medical Equipment Technician until his retirement in 2006 from American Home Patient. He met his wife, Rada Laverne Nutt Schultz, through his work for National Medical Rentals. She answered his company calls in Arkansas, and soon, their conversations about business led to personal discussions that grew longer and longer. In 1996, Rada finally came to Texas to meet Curtis in person; they married on May 30, 1998 at Heritage Park. Through their eighteen years of marriage, Curtis and Rada never fought once, and their children include Mysti Schultz (now deceased) and Cindy Durning.

The Schultzs later accepted Cindy's daughter, Tristyn, in order to raise her as their own child, and Curtis loved spending time with her and his other children. They found their father patient and engaging, at times goofy and always approachable despite his reserved nature. He was caring and kind, even as he posed his favorite rhetorical question, "How dumb can you be?" He loved piddling around his yard in his favorite camo clothes as he listened to classic country music-songs by singers like George Jones, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard-and watched Astros baseball, happy to be at home, especially if someone had just made a warm batch of oatmeal raisin cookies to share with him. But he also enjoyed the chance to get away now and then, such as with his trip to Exotic Zoo Resort in Johnson City, TX, or to his favorite Mexican restaurants. He was a simple man with simple tastes and a quiet strength of character that let others simply love him.

Mourning the loss of Curtis are his surviving family members including his wife Rada, his daughters Cindy and Tristyn, as well as his beloved grandson, Matthew; brother, Edwin; and sister, Mavis. Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, his brother (Herman), his sister (Esther) and one daughter (Mysti). Just as Curtis believed in heaven and Jesus, so are his family members assured of his salvation and eternal rest in The Lord.
