- Obituary:
Lenora Josephine Payne died peacefully in her sleep on January 1, 2009, in Austin, Texas. She was born to parents Frank and Josephine Bednar on March 19, 1920, in Caldwell, Texas. Lenora was a resident of Austin since 1957 and prior to that lived near her family in Caldwell.
She graduated from Caldwell High School then continued her education at Brackenridge School of Nursing in Austin, Texas. She served as a 1st Lieutenant Nurse in the U.S. Army during World War II. After serving in the Army, Lenora worked as a nurse at Brackenridge and Seton hospitals in Austin, where she served her patients with knowledgeable, loving care. She retired from Brackenridge Hospital in July of 1976.
She was preceded in death by parents Frank and Rosalie Bednar, brother Frank Bednar, sisters Rosalie Marek and Millie George, son Charles Payne and granddaughter Rebecca Luetkenhoelter Walpole.
Lenora is survived by daughters, Mary Roberts of Austin, Opal Culp of San Antonio and Connie Iley of Greenfield, Indiana; son, John Payne and his wife Ann of Cedar Park; and 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great- great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation on Monday, January 5th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Cook -Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, Texas. Graveside services will be held at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville on Tuesday, January 6th at 10:00 am. Reverend Melvin Wright of Ulit Avenue Missionary Baptist Church in Austin, Texas will preside over the ceremony. Burial with military honors will follow.
The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Duval Gardens and Angel Heart Hospice for their loving care of Lenora. They truly made her final days as peaceful and comfortable as possible and all of their attention is greatly appreciated.
