  Obituary: Ottis Houston, age 91, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at the VA Nursing Home in Oxford. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and a retired engineer. He was a World War II Air Force veteran, where he was involved in the Bataan Death March. He was captured a few days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and was a prisoner of war for three years, seven months and eight days; he was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was a member of The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Services were at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc with Bro. Johnathan Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Bay Springs Cemetery in Bay Springs. Survivors include his two daughters, Linda Houpt (Alan), of Ecru, and Sandra Estes (Warren), of Bay Springs; a son, Johnny Stephens (Rachel), of Mendenhall; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vester E. Houston and Hattie Daughtry Houston; his wife, Lucy Mae Thornton; and a grandson, Scott Estes. Visitation was from 5:30 until 8 p.m. on Thursday and from 9 until 10 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Friendship Baptist Church, 85 Friendship Road, Pontotoc, MS 38863.
