McCracken
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church for Ethel Mae McCracken, 60, who died at 11:20 Monday in a Lubbock hospital following an extended illness.
Dr. Claude Craven, pastor, will officiate. Burial will occur in Trinity Memorial Park under the direction of Nalley-Pickle Funeral Home.
Mrs. McCracken was born April 3, 1917 in Big Spring. She attended public schools in Highway and Knott, and graduated from Big Spring High School.
She later attended Draughan's Business College in Abilene.
She began work with the J.B. Collins Insurance and Loan Agency, then located at 112 E. 2nd, in 1938. World War II interrupted the business, and during this time Mrs. McCracken served as a chief supply clerk at Fort Hood.
The business was reopened after the war at 204 Runnels, and Mrs. McCracken returned to work. After several years she became a partner in the firm.
Later, Mr. Collins sold his share of the business to another longtime employee and sister of Mrs. McCracken, Bonnie Bennett. The name of the firm was then changed to Howard County Insurance Agency.
All in all, Mrs. McCracken's ties with the agency spanned nearly 40 years.
She was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, Altrusa International and the Big Spring Insurance Association.
Survivors include a son, Bobby J. McCracken, of the home; her mother, Mrs. R.W. McNew, Big Spring; a brother, R.X. McNew, Big Spring; three sisters, Bonnie Bennett, Gertrude McCann, Callie Bennett, all of Big Spring; an ex-husband, Byron McCracken, Big Spring; a number of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Pallbearers are nephews and cousins, Rexie McNew, Coy Joe McCann, Roy McNew, Tim Davidson, Jerry Bennett, William McNew, Robert Howland and Bobby Dale McNew.
