Roy Simmons Madden Jr.
June 12, 1929 ~ December 12, 2024
95 Years Old
Roy Madden, 55 year resident of Julian, CA passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024.
Born in Los Angeles, CA on June 12, 1929 to Roy Simmons Sr. and Marie Elizabeth Madden. He graduated from Glendale High School and Glendale Community College. As a young man his passion was working on and racing Ford Roadsters. He would go to the Dry Lake Beds with his father and buddies, making memories racing their cars.
Roy enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was in the Navy from 1950-1954, serving on the USS Salisbury Sound 1953-1954 as a Sea Plane Tender in the South China Sea performing Submarine Warfare. This is where Roy's long career in aviation started.
He met the love of his life, JoAnn, and they were married on April 12, 1958. Together they moved to Julian, CA in 1969 and raised their four boys.
He had a long and successful career as a flight engineer for Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) where he retired from. In retirement, he went to work for Tradewinds Int'l Airlines moving cargo all over the world. He was very well traveled.
Roy loved the country life and his small town community. In his free time he would work around the house and tinker on his projects in the garage while listening to Jazz music. When his boys were young, there was always a summer family vacation that usually involved camping out, and some adventure he would share with them.
As the boys got older and moved away, he and JoAnn would spend many afternoons on the patio relaxing. They bought a condo in Laughlin, NV where they spent much of their free time boating on the river, eating out and enjoying each other and anyone that came to visit them there.
In recent years, Roy enjoyed watching the old black and white movies, especially the Westerns, and telling stories of his past and memories.
He is survived by his sons, Patrick G. Madden and his wife Rhona of Castro Valley, CA, Brian J. Madden and his partner Andrea McCraken of Crofton, KY, and Daniel F. Madden and his wife Jennifer of Woodland, CA. Seven grandchildren, Norman, Amber, Matthew, Brianna, Justin, Will, and Amelia Madden. Four great grandchildren.
