    • Obituary:

      Hans Thomas Walker, 92, was civic leader

      SPARTANBURG - Hans Thomas Walker, civic leader and resident of 110 Anderson Drive, died Jan. 15, 1993, at Doctors Memorial Hospital. He was 92.

      He was a retired employee of Amoco Oil Co. and the Civil Defense.

      He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, a former deacon and elder of Routh Memorial Presbyterian Church.

      A candidate for governor of Florida in 1940, he was organizer of the Croft Fire Department and helped in the organization of 25 others. He was co-organizer and a member of the Spartanburg County Fire Chiefs Association, a member of the South Carolina Fireman's Association, and a former member of Southeastern Fire Chiefs and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

      He was recipient of the State Fireman's Citizenship Award and was inducted into the Fireman's Hall of Fame for South Carolina and Spartanburg County. An outstanding fireman award is given annually in his honor.

      A member of the Spartanburg Rotary Club, he was inducted as a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International.

      Surviving are two sons, Dr. Tom Walker of Titusville, Fla., and Leland Brandt of the home; and a daughter, Jane Brandt of the home.

      Services: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Luke United Methodist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

      Visitation: 7 to 0 p.m. Monday at Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home, Spartanburg.

      The family is at the residence.

      Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 105 McKay Ave., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302, and to Croft Rescue 10, P.O. Box 2892, Spartanburg, S.C. 29304.
