- Obituary:
A memorial service for Dr. James F. Wygant is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, July 7, at Meadowwood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Fla. A reception will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at Dorothy B. Oven Park, 3205 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee.
Born Aug. 4, 1919, in Hornell, N.Y., to Harold and Esther Wygant, he passed away Saturday, June 17, 2006, in Houston. He has gone to rejoin his beloved wife Carol in a better place.
Jim graduated cum laude from Alfred University with a bachelor of science degree in ceramic engineering in 1941, and went to work for the Missouri Portland Cement Company in St. Louis. In 1943, he volunteered for the World War II draft. While in the Army and training at the University of Alabama, Jim met Carol Walker, a young civil engineering student. After a whirlwind wartime courtship, they married on July 3, 1944, beginning a lifelong partnership that lasted 54 years, until her death in 1998. Jim was honorably discharged in 1946 after serving overseas in North Africa. Returning to Alfred University after the war, Jim earned a master of science degree and then went on to MIT to take a doctorate in ceramic engineering in 1950. Jim worked for 30 years in research for Standard Oil of Indiana (later Amoco, now BP) in Chicago, Whiting, Ind. and Naperville, Ill. Dr. Wygant rose to director of corporate research and manager of corporate services at the Amoco Research Lab in Naperville, until he retired in 1979 to Tallahassee. Those who knew him as Dr. Wygant, as Jim or as Dad uniformly aspired to rise to his standard. And yet, he had the grace to make the humblest person feel as his peer. We are better for having known him.
Jim is survived by his brother, Foster Wygant of Cincinnati; his children, Margaret Marcum of Austin, Texas, Roger Wygant of Sandersville, Ga., Daniel Wygant of Fayetteville, Tenn., Susan Young of Houston, Charles Wygant of Tallahassee, James Wygant of Houston and Laurance Wygant of DuPont, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were made by Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Tallahassee, 850-877-8191.
