SOUTHINGTON, Conn. - Charles Montraville Horton, 77, of Southington, beloved husband of Maryann McDonough Horton, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Ft. Pierce, Fla., on Oct. 6, 1923, to the late Charles M. and Ruby Swain Horton, he graduated valedictorian of his Vero Beach High School Class of 1941. He then served as a commissioned officer during World War II, graduating from the University of Chicago with a bachelor's degree in meteorology in 1944. He was a key member of the U.S. Air Weather Service, where he continued to serve as a civilian for many years in New Orleans and Asheville. Upon retirement, he began a second successful career with IBM Corp., including an assignment in Germany as a senior information systems designer, retiring again in 1985.
An Accomplished bridge player and devotee of classical music, Charlie composed church anthems and other religious pieces. He was a founding member and choir director of the Asheville Westminister Presbyterian Church as well as being a long-standing member and president of the Asheville Lion's Club. His interests in meteorology continued throughout his life, and he enjoyed being the personal weather forecaster for family and friends. He was an accomplished photographer, an avid reader and a world traveler with a special fondness for Ireland.
His first wife, Betty Hayes Horton, and their daughter, Ann Horton, preceded him in death.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his brother-in-law, John McDonough, who resided with the couple; daughters, Nancy Horton of West Hartford, Conn., and Dr. Marjorie Horton of Ann Arbor, Mich.; son-in-law, Dr. John Kuwada; five grandchildren, Will, Dan and Lauren Taylor and Elizabeth and Alex Kuwada; his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Thomas and Marilou Horton of DeLand, Fla.; sister, Edna Case of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; and his devoted little dog, Dixie.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 145 Main St. Burial will be private.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at John J. Ferry Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, Conn.
