- Obituary:
Mary Vaughn Luhman of Gaithersburg, Maryland made her journey to heaven on August 29, 2012. Mary was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on May 17, 1943 to Paul and Sophia Vaughn.
Mary graduated from Mascoutah High School in Mascoutah, Illinois. She graduated, (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Maryland and continued her graduate studies at the University of Maryland.
Mary was Vice President of Defense Programs, PLATO Learning Inc. As Contract Manager for the technology based Navy College Learning Centers, she personally opened most centers, hired and trained personnel and directly or indirectly supervised the performance of approximately 75 employees devoted to that Contract worldwide. Prior to employment at PLATO, Mary was the Director of Operations and Technical Support for Sylvan KEE Systems, Eastern Region Manager, Test Center Operations National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), and Eastern Region Manager, Certification Services, at Control Data Corporation.
Actively involved in her community, Mary was appointed to the Police Advisory Committee of the Gaithersburg Police Department and helped with the Orchard Place HOA. She also enjoyed outings with the Red Hat Society and the Gaithersburg Senior Center.
Mary enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, vacationing in Cape May, New Jersey. She loved animals, especially Yorkshire Terriers, and was a member of FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo).
Mary Vaughn Luhman is survived by her daughter Cindy Luhman Cardone (Paul) of The Woodlands, Texas, Kelly Luhman Orsini (Benito) of McKinney, Texas; Jennifer Luhman Maslin (Scott) of Clarksburg, Maryland and Jon Luhman of Gaithersburg, Maryland. A very proud, "GranMary" to seven grandchildren: Alyssa, Anna, Ava, Emilia, Luca, Abby and Chloe. Mary is survived by her siblings: Rosalee Vaughn Schultz of Blue Springs, Missouri, Kay Vaughn Carroll of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Karen Vaughn O'Carroll of Chandler, Arizona and Ronald Vaughn of San Diego, California. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lt. Col. Paul B. Vaughn and Sophia Heider Vaughn and her sisters Sharon Vaughn and Debbie Vaughn Shank.
A celebration of Mary's life will take place on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the Rockville United Methodist Church at 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary's memory to the American Cancer Society.
Mary's children would like to thank the nursing staff of 2B at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital for their outstanding care and support.
