    • Obituary:

      Cpl. Jeremy R. Shank, 18, of Jackson, Mo., born Feb. 29, 1988, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, while serving his country in Iraq.

      Cpl. Shank attended Jackson High School and the enlisted in the United States Army on May 31, 2005. He graduated basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Ga., as an infantryman. He was initially assigned to 1-21 Infantry on Jan. 30, 2006, before transferring to A Company 2-27 on March 26, 2006, where he served as a mortar man. He arrived with his platoon to Forward Operating Base McHenry on Aug. 23, 2006. His awards and decorations include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Operation Iraqi Freedom Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal, the Expert Marksman Badge and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Jeremy was an avid hunter, a member of the National Turkey Federation, and was anticipating a trip home during deer season this November.

      He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, James Shank Jr.; maternal grandparents, Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs. Paul B. Vaughn; and maternal aunt, Sharon Vaughn.

      Surviving are his parents, James A. and Deborah J., nee Vaughn, Shank of Jackson, Mo.; two brothers, Christopher and Nathan Shank both of Jackson, Mo.; and fiancee, Ashley Hahn of Millersville, Mo.; his paternal family, grandmother, Evelyn Shank of Belleville, Ill., and aunt, Judi Shank of Belleville, Ill.; his maternal family, uncle, Ronald Vaughn of San Diego, Calif., four aunts, Kay (Joe) Carroll of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Karen (Tom) O'Carroll of Chandler, Ariz., Rosalee (Robert) Schultz of Lee Summit, Mo., and Mary Vaughn-Luhman of Gaithersburg, Md.

      Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at McCombs Funeral Home, Jackson, Mo., and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at First Baptist Church, Jackson, Mo.

      Funeral: Funeral Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at First Baptist Church, Jackson, Mo., with the Rev. Carter Frey officiating. Interment with full military honors will be follow in Russell Heights Cemetery, Jackson, Mo.
