Obituary:

J.A. Bumgardner, 77 years old, and for 60 years a resident of Bossier parish where he emigrated from Talladega, Ala., in 1865, died Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of his son, J.A. Bumgardner, Jr., 2124 Seymour street. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock from the home of his son-in-law, Lonnie Houston, 3149 Samford avenue, where services conducted by Dr. M.E. Dodd and the Rev. Winston Borum, pastor and assistant pastor of the First Baptist church, of which he was a member. The body will be sent to Linton for burial. He was married June 10, 1880 to Miss Alwilda Ketura Holly and to them eight children were born, three of whom survive him, Mrs. J.G. Warfield of Houston, and J.A. and John Bumgardner of Shreveport. Two brothers, L.R. and W.R. Bumgardner, both of Linton, also survive him. He was a veteran of the Confederacy and a member of Gen. LeRoy Stafford Camp, U.C.V., Shreveport.

Bumgardner Burial Rites Slated Today

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Rose-Neath chapel for Jacob Alex Bumgardner, 63, of 719 Travis street, who died at 11:30 p.m. Monday at a local hospital after a long illness.

The Rev. H.G. Buchanan, pastor of the Calvary Baptist church, will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at the Red River cemetery at Linton.

Bumgardner, a retired shipping clerk, had been a resident of Shreveport for the past 35 years. He was born at Linton in Bossier parish. He was associated with the Hemenway-Johnson Furniture company and later with the Roby Furniture company. He retired three years ago due to ill health.

Bumgardner is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lena Kendrick Bumgardner; four sons, J.K. of Baton Rouge; F.A., F.M. and J.E., all of Shreveport; four daughters, Mrs. T.T. Elkins, Natchitoches; Mrs. W.V. Sistrunk and Mrs. V.H. Brown, both of Shreveport; and Mrs. Louis Bass of Long Beach, Calif.; one brother, John W. Bumgardner, Shreveport; one sister, Mrs. J.G. Warfield, Houston, Texas; and 11 grandchildren.

Active pallbearers will be R.L. Hudson, W.R. Birdwell, Harry Bumgardner, W.F. Dalrymple, Jr., Arthur Ray Teague, and Milton Davis.

Honorary pallbearers will be H.D. Tucker, Dr. John W. Cobb and employees of the Roby Furniture company.

Graveside services for John Watkins Bumgardner, 83, will be at 4 p.m. today at Ridgecrest Cemetery with Dr. R. Trevis Otey and the Rev. H.C. Zachry officiating. Griffin Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Bumgardner died Sunday at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital after a long illness. Born and reared in Louisiana, he moved to Jackson 13 years ago. He was a postal inspector with more than 50 years of services in Louisiana and Kansas. He was a member of the Masons, a Shriner and a member of First Baptist Church. He served in World War I.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Johnnie Cockrill Bumgardner, and a stepson, Dr. Don Webb, both of Jackson.

Mrs. Ada Verlie Fletcher, 63, of 827 Euclid St., Houston, Tex., a former Shreveport resident, died Tuesday in a Houston hospital.

Mrs. Fletcher was a native of Elliott, Ark. She was a member of the Woodland Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of Postal Supervisors.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sam H. Green Funeral Home chapel in Houston. The Rev. Odom Dyess will officiate. Burial will be here in Forest Park Cemetery, with graveside services at 10 a.m. Friday.

Mr. Houston was born in Shreveport May 3, 1914; was a graduate of Byrd high school, and a member of the First Baptist church.

He is survived by his widow, the former Mattie Amanda Dickinson, of Doyline, whom he married May 2, 1936; an infant son, Francis Nevel, II; his father, Lonnie Houston, of the Caddo Roofing and Siding company; one brother, Lonnie Gordon Houston, of Montgomery, Ala.; and seven sisters, Mrs. P.W. Fletcher, Mrs. E.R. Goodgion, Margaret, Lucy, Elaine, Carolyn, and Esther Houston, all of Shreveport.

Margaret Elsie (Houston) LeBlanc, 94, went to be with the Lord on the morning of February 15, 2013 surrounded by her loved ones at home in College Station, Texas.

Margaret was born on August 14, 1918 in Shreveport, La., to Lonnie Houston and Ada Lillian Bumgardner, the youngest of 5 children. Her mother passed away when Margaret was only 14 months old. As a kid, Margaret spent a lot of time outdoors, playing shinny, or street hockey, and playing with paper dolls. She loved reading and being read to. Margaret graduated from C.E. Byrd High School of Shreveport in 1936 and was a homemaker. Shortly after, Margaret met her husband Howard J. LeBlanc in Shreveport and they married December 23, 1939. They had their only daughter, Cherie, in 1946. Howard was an air traffic controller, often moving around with his work. Margaret and Howard moved to Puerto Rico in 1958 and then to College Station, Texas in 1961. Her grandson, Brian, was born shortly after. Howard passed away in 1984, leaving her daughter to care for her. With the birth of her great-grandson in 1993, Margaret sought to take care of him while Cherie was at work, providing lots of love and care. Family meant the world to her.

She is preceded in death by her father, Lonnie Houston; mother, Ada Bumgardner Houston; brothers Francis Nevel Houston and Lonnie Gordon Houston; sisters Sybil Houston Goodgion, Verlie Houston Fletcher, and Viola Houston; and her husband of 45 years Howard John LeBlanc.

Survivors include one daughter, Cherie LeBlanc of College Station, Texas; one grandson, Brian LeBlanc of Queen Creek, Ariz.; one great-grandson, Cody LeBlanc of College Station; nieces, Patsy Beck of Denton, Texas, Sybil Clarke of Shreveport, La., and Nancy Mook of New Orleans, La.; one nephew, Nevel Houston Ehrhardt, and a host of wonderful friends and neighbors.

With heartfelt gratitude, the family expresses their deep appreciation to Dr. Adel Massoud and the College Station Medical Center staff, along with Brazos Valley Hospice.

Per her request, Margaret's body is to be donated to the Texas A&M Medical School. There will be no funeral service. Any donations may be made to Brazos Valley Hospice.

Mrs. Elkins, 77, of Natchitoches died Sunday, March 3, 1996, in Natchitoches Parish Hospital.

She was a native of Benton and a graduate of Northwestern State University. She was a retired schoolteacher. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Natchitoches Chapter No. 13 Order of the Eastern Star and Emmanuel Baptist Church.

MACON - Fred Bumgardner, 85, died Saturday, June 3, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 10A.M. Tuesday at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Pio Nono Avenue. Burial will be in Macon Memorial Park. Mr. Bumgardner was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and had lived in Macon since 1967. He was retired from R.A.F.B. and was a member of Glenwood Hills Baptist Church. Mr. Bumgardner also taught Sunday School for the Macon Fire Department at Stations #5 and 7 for thirty-five plus years, where he was highly respected and dearly loved by the firefighters. He was the widower of Bonnie Jean Bottoms Bumgardner.

Mr. Bumgardner is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Delores Bumgardner of Macon; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and William Stead of Merritt Island, FL; two grandchildren, Vance Bumgardner of Macon and Ashleigh Merriman of Orlando, FL; two sisters.

Betty Virginia Fletcher, 19, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P.W. Fletcher, long time Shreveport residents, died at 2:45 p.m. yesterday at Houston, Texas. She had been ill of pneumonia for a week.

Miss Fletcher moved to Houston about a year ago with her parents. She was reared in Shreveport and attended school here. Her father was employed by the Shreveport Railways company for many years.

Besides her parents, she is survived by one sister, Patsy Ann Fletcher, Houston; and the maternal and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Houston and Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Fletcher, all of Shreveport.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Osborn funeral chapel in Shreveport and burial will be in Forest Park cemetery. The Rev. F.W. Harold, pastor of the Woodlawn Baptist church, Houston, will conduct services.

WILLOW, CA - Ernest Randall "Randy" Goodgion retired to the teachers' lounge in the sky on Sunday, April 10th, 2005.

Randy was born February 1, 1934 in Shreveport where he graduated from Byrd High School in 1952 and Centenary College in 1956. Randy possessed considerable humor and brio-always ready to brighten a friend's day with a joke or off-color story. As part of his family's dancing troop, Randy performed with his sisters, Sybil and Nancy Goodgion, for wounded soldiers during World War II at veteran hospitals all over Louisiana and Texas. The troop danced for the Clyde Fant for Mayor Campaign, the Centenary Choir and many area civic clubs. After serving his country in the US Army, Randy moved to Willows, California where he taught English and French for 40 years at Willows High School and Butte College where a scholarship was established in his honor in 1999.

He is survived by his sisters, Sybil Goodgion Clarke and Nancy Goodgion Mook, as well as his many nieces, nephews, and former students.

A graveside service will commence at 2:00 PM at Forest Park Cemetery on Tuesday, April 19, 2005. Officiating will be Rev. Steven Spurlock, pastor of Broadmoor United Methodist Church.

He will be remembered as a jolly, boisterous teacher, uncle, brother, and friend. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Willows High School PTA.

Sybil Goodgion Clarke, devoted wife, beloved mother, and spirited grandmother took her final bow on Tuesday, December 10, 2013.

She was born to Sybil Houston Goodgion and Ernest Ruel Goodgion on July 30, 1935 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Sybil was, at her heart, a tap dancer; an artist whose surprising idiosyncrasies and broad improvisations astonished and delighted us all. Sybil danced to her own beat. She performed tap and ballet as part of her family dance troop in the 40s and 50s. She was a 1953 graduate of C.E. Byrd and attended Louisiana Tech. In the early 60s, she worked at Penrod Oil as a secretary where she was set up on a blind date with a young geologist, Dee Clarke. They would later marry and have four sons. She loved Dee through over 45 years of marriage, and nursed him through 25 years of Parkinson's Disease. Sybil was an active member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church, Shreveport Garden Club, her Sunday School Class, and the Shreveport Geological Society. In her spare time, she tutored kids at A.C. Steere Elementary in reading.

She always spoke her mind. She wore purple. She wore orange. She wore yellow. Sometimes all together, with rhinestones. She knew how to have fun. She loved God and her family. She never gave up on any of us. She prayed for everyone.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harris Gibson Clarke Jr. as well as both of her parents and her brother, Ernest Randolf Goodgion.

She is survived by her four sons and their families: Mr. and Mrs. Harris Grant Clarke of Seattle, WA; Mr. and Mrs. Dan Clarke of Dallas, TX; Mr. and Mrs. Will Clarke of Dallas, TX; Mr. and Mrs. Josh Clarke of Shreveport; her sister, Nancy Goodgion Mook of Greenville, NC. Her grandchildren: Breanna and Jeremy Balis of Salem, West Virginia; Ainsley Clarke, Caroline Clarke, Elizabeth Clarke, Andrew Witcher, and Jack Witcher of Dallas; Ben Clarke and Madeline Clarke of Seattle; Caleb Clarke, Morgan Clarke, and Katelyn Clarke of Shreveport. Her great grandchildren: Olivia Balis and Jacob Balis of Salem, West Virginia.

Viewing is Friday Dec. 13, from 6:00 until 7:00 PM in Wellman's Memorial Chapel at Forest Park Funeral Home.

Her service will be Sat. Dec. 14 at Broadmoor United Methodist at 11:00 AM and a graveside service will follow at Forest Park Cemetery.

Mr. Bumgardner was the son of the late Fred and Bonnie Jean Bumgardner. He was a member of Forest Hill United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Christian Living Sunday School Class. He served on the Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of Central Georgia. He was a member of the Wood-Badge Staff in Atlanta and Macon. He received the Silver Beaver and Vigil Honor awards, and was a former assistant Scout Master. Mr. Bumgardner was a United States Marine for 22 years serving during Vietnam and Desert Storm. He was a lifetime member of DAV, and had 34 years of experience as a Utility Contractor. Mr. Bumgardner was involved in local politics and was an officer in the Middle Georgia Auburn Alumni, was active in the Auburn Alumni Association, and Tigers Unlimited.

Mr. Bumgardner is survived by his wife, Delores Griffin Bumgardner; son, Daniel Vance Bumgardner, Jr. of Macon; sister, Susan Stead of Merritt Island, FL; numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Joy was born August 31, 1950 in Shreveport, LA and went to be with the Lord on December 9, 2018. Joy was a faithful member of Rose Park Baptist Church for nearly three decades. Over the years, she served in the nursery, worked with youth, cooked Wednesday night suppers, and volunteered whenever needed. Joy enjoyed antiquing, hosting gatherings, and spending time with her family. She had a feisty spirit mixed with a servant's heart. She loved deeply, gave generously, and took on the role of "Mom" to numerous kids throughout the years. Home, surrounded by those she loved, was her favorite place to be. Her laugh and love will be greatly missed, but she is now resting safely in her Heavenly Father's arms.

Joy was preceded in death by her mother, Lila Holder Sims and father, James Earl Bumgardner. Murder of Mark Steven Bass - October 16, 1984

Venson Dean Vampran and Susan Bass were charged by a single grand jury indictment with the second degree murder of Mark Steven Bass in violation of La.R.S. 14:30.1. The trial court, on motion of both defendants, ordered severance of the indictment. Defendant, after pleading not guilty, was tried before a jury and found guilty as charged. The trial court sentenced defendant to a term of life imprisonment without benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

Defendant brings this appeal urging twenty-six assignments of error. Assignments of error numbers six, ten, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, eighteen, twenty, twentyfour and twenty-five were not briefed and, therefore, are considered abandoned. Uniform Rules, Court of Appeal, Rule 2-12.4; State v. Trevathan, 432 So.2d 355 (La.App. 1st Cir.1983), writ denied, 437 So.2d 1141 (La.1983).

FACTS:

Shortly after midnight on October 17, 1984, a pickup truck driven by Venson Dean Vampran was stopped in Madisonville, Louisiana, by Corporal John Dillon of the St.Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office. Corporal Dillon testified that he pursued defendant's vehicle because of broken taillights and the erratic and evasive manner in which the vehicle was operated. After initially approaching Corporal Dillon, defendant returned to the truck's cab to retrieve his driver's license. At the same time, Susan Bass, a passenger in defendant's vehicle, exited the cab and approached the rear of defendant's truck. Corporal Dillon asked defendant and Susan Bass to step aside so he could check the truck license plate. At that time, he noticed fresh blood seeping from beneath the tailgate. In response to Corporal Dillon's inquiry seeking identification of the cargo being carried, defendant remarked, "Oh, shit," which was followed by Susan Bass' assertion, "It's a body. He's killed my husband." Upon inspection, Corporal Dillon discovered a dead body, later identified as that of Mark Steven Bass, in the bed of defendant's pickup truck. Thereafter, defendant was placed under arrest and advised of his Miranda rights. After preliminary investigation at the scene, defendant and Susan Bass were both transported to the sheriff's office. Each was interrogated and gave a statement describing the events preceding Mark Bass' death.

Defendant stated he returned from work during the afternoon of October 16, 1984, to find that his wife and children had moved from their family home. That evening, he drove to Waveland, Mississippi, hoping to locate his wife, who had relatives residing in that city. Defendant bought a pint of Jack Daniels whiskey in Covington, Louisiana, which he consumed during the trip to Mississippi. Defendant stopped and bought another bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey later that evening. While returning from Mississippi, defendant offered a ride to a female hitchhiker who was standing near a St. Tammany Parish interstate exit That hitchhiker, later identified as Susan Bass, offered defendant sexual favors in exchange for a detour of his intended course of travel. The purported object for the detour was to retrieve a package. Susan Bass directed defendant through a circuitous route which ended on a dead-end road in Oak Knoll Subdivision off the Talisheek-Abita Road in St. Tammany Parish. When defendant stopped his truck, he immediately observed a human figure laying on the side of the road. Further investigation revealed that the figure was the bleeding body of a man, later identified as Mark Steven Bass, Susan Bass' husband. Susan Bass told defendant she would inform the police he had killed her husband if defendant did not assist in disposing of the body. While attempting to leave the scene, defendant's truck became stuck in a drainage ditch. Defendant gave Susan Bass a tire tool to use as a digging implement in an attempt to free his truck. Defendant ultimately used a tractor which had been located in the yard of neighboring property. With the assistance of Susan Bass, defendant towed his truck from the ditch and loaded Mark Bass' body onto the bed of the truck. Defendant and Susan Bass were en route to dump Mark Bass' body in the river when they were stopped by Corporal Dillon.

Lieutenant David Bulloch testified that defendant was able to direct him and Detective McCormick to the site where the victim's body was loaded into defendant's truck. Corporal Wyatt McCullough, also involved in the crime scene investigation, discovered a tire tool in a ditch at that site. About forty feet from the tire tool, he found scattered coins and a brown wallet which contained items belonging to Mark Bass.

An autopsy conducted by Dr. Charles Crumpler, a pathologist, revealed that Mark Bass had died as a result of multiple wounds to the front and back portions of his torso and the back of his head. Hemorrhaging in his soft tissues indicated that the victim was still alive when all the wounds were inflicted. Time of death was fixed at between 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. on the night of October 16,1984. Additionally, Dr. Crumpler testified that the wounds on the victim's body were consistent with having been inflicted by the recovered tire tool. Because of the similarity in the size of the wounds, Dr. Crumpler opined that all the wounds had been caused by one instrument.

Defendant's employer, Preston Crawford, testified that due to inclement weather defendant did not work on Monday, October 15, 1984. James Tamplin, an employee at the Wine Cellar liquor store in Waveland, Mississippi, testified that the defendant, Susan Bass and Mark Bass arrived together at the store during the late afternoon of October 15, 1984. (Defendant, in his statement, denied ever seeing Mark Bass alive or being acquainted with Susan or Mark Bass prior to the night of October 16, 1984.)

John Robert Edwards, born June 7, 1947 in Austin, TX died December 3, 2010 of complications from cancer. He is survived by his wife Irana, and daughters Jennifer Burns, Sofia, Melissa Grace, and son Robert John, granddaughters, Lexie and Lilly, his brother Jim and first wife Suzanne Edwards.

A graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School, University of Houston student, and Vietnam War Veteran, Johns' professional life started in Purchasing with Brown and Root and continued till his death while working as Procurement Director for McDermott Asia/Pacific, based in The Republic of Singapore. John traveled worldwide seeing, Times Red, and Tennamon Squares, The Forbidden City and many places that he said he never thought he would see being a Cold War child and a UT Longhorn fan.

John was a member of United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school and Disciples classes. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, sage advice and support in addition to his love for his family

A celebration of life will be held for John Thursday, December 9, at 12:30 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home located at 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas.
