    G.O. HOUSTON LAID TO REST AT MANSFIELD

    Funeral Service Held in First Baptist Church in Shreveport

    Last rites for Gilbert Orren Houston, 51, of Baton Rouge, who died in a local sanitarium early Sunday morning, were held at the First Baptist church at 1 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. M.E. Dodd, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Bennett of Mansfield, officiating.

    After the services the body of the deceased educator, who was secretary of the Louisiana State Teachers association, was taken overland by the Osborn funeral home to Mansfiled for burial.

    Mr. Houston suffered a heart attack at Baton Rouge on Christmas eve and was brought here for treatment. His condition gradually grew worse.

    Long prominent in school activities in this section, Mr. Houston became assistant superintendent of education in Caddo Parish in 1926, after having distinguished himself as superintendent of education of DeSoto parish. He moved to Baton Rouge in 1931 when was chosen secretary of the Louisiana Teachers association.

    Surviving the deceased are his widow; a daughter, Miss Frances Houston; four sisters, Mrs. G.E. Hodges of Shreveport, Mrs. John Adkins of Cotton Valley, Mrs. Porter Cochran of Springhill, and Mrs. S.B. Pugh of Sarepta, and five brothers, I.N. Houston, L. Houston and V.E. Houston, all of Shreveport, and Dr. W.M. Houston of El Dorado and L.L. Houston of Sarepta.

    Active pallbearers were W.L. Colvin, Jeanerette; S.B. Emmons, Minden; H.W. Wright, Jonesville; Spencer Phillips, Pelican; L.W. Ferguson, Haynesville; W.B. Always, Donaldsonville; L.E. Frazar, Merryville, and E.W. Jones, Shreveport.

    Honorary pallbearers were F.C. Rogers, Baton Rouge; Mrs. W.B. Eisley, Tallulah, and all parish superintendents, all officials of the state department of education and members of the Caddo parish school board.

    G.O. HOUSTON, 50, EDUCATOR, DIES SUNDAY

    Services for Secretary of Teachers' Group to Be Held Today

    G.O. Houston, 50, of Baton Rouge, La., died in a Shreveport sanitarium at 3 p.m. Sunday.

    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the First Baptist church. Dr. M.E. Dodd, pastor, assisted by the Reverend Bennett of the Mansfield Baptist church will officiate. Interment will be at Mansfield under the direction of the Osborn funeral home.

    Pallbearers will be W.L. Colvin, Jeanerette; S.R. Emmons, Minden; H.W. Wright, Jonesville; Spencer Phillips, Pelican; L.W. Ferguson, Haynesville; W.B. Always, Donaldsonville; L.E. Frazar, Merryville, and E.W. Jones of Shreveport.

    Honorary pallbearers will be P.C. Rogers of Baton Rouge, Mrs. W.B. Eisley of Tallulah, all parish school superintendents, all officials of the state department of education, and members of the Caddo parish school board.

    Mr. Houston had for years been an outstanding figure in educational circles of the state. He was secretary of the Louisiana Teacher's association and had served as assistant superintendent of Caddo parish schools from 1926 to 1931. He was an instructor for a time at Louisiana State Normal. He served as superintendent of schools of DeSoto parish from 1912-1926. Mr. Houston had been a prominent figure in seeking legislation in the state for educational causes. In 1924 he served as president of the Louisiana State Teachers' association.

    The deceased is survived by his widow; one daughter, Miss Frances Houston; four sisters, Mrs. G.E. Hodges of Shreveport, Mrs. John Adkins of Cotton Valley, Mrs. Porter Cochran of Springhill and Mrs. S.B. Pugh of Sarepta, and five brothers, I.N. Houston, L. Houston, V.E. Houston, all of Shreveport; Dr. W.M. Houston of El Dorado, Ark., and L.L. Houston of Sarepta.

    Mr. Houston was a native of Webster parish having been born and reared at Sarepta.

    The deceased was stricken with a heart attack and complications on Christmas eve in Baton Rouge. He was brought to a sanitarium here. He took a turn for the worst Saturday night and died Sunday afternoon.

    RUSTON - Funeral services for Mrs. Frances Houston Hamilton, 60, of Dubach, were at 2 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church of Dubach with the Rev. Dayton Doughty officiating.

    Burial was in Hamilton Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick's Funeral home for Mrs. Hamilton, who died Tuesday at Lincoln General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

    Survivors include her husband, James Hamilton of Dubach; one daughter, Mrs. Nancy Green of Baton Rouge and two grandchildren.

    The family requests that any planned memorials be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home.
