    Notes:

Peter Paul Drgac (pronounced "Der-gatch") was born on July 21,1883 in New Tabor, a small farming community in Central Texas near the town of Caldwell. New Tabor had been settled by his parents and other immigrants from Czechoslovakia in the mid 1800's. Pete Drgac attended school through the seventh grade. As was common in rural families, Pete left school to work on the family farm. New Tabor was a tight knit ethnic community. Czech was spoken in the home and traditions of religion, music and food were strong and vibrant. The young Drgac grew up with strong ties to his family's past. But it appears that Pete Drgac was also influenced by the entrepreneurial spirit of the new country to which he had been born. After marrying Francis Mrnustik in 1905, he left the family farm to open a small grocery store and bakery near New Tabor, eventually leaving his hometown in 1922 to relocate his family and business to the larger town of Rosenberg. There, he and his wife lived a life of hard work, typical of small town Texas. The long hours of operating a successful small family run business, which included the grocery store and bakery, was natural for the industrious farm raised Pete. It is said that he even sewed his wife's clothes. The couple, though, had no children. Of course, the Drgacs were well known in Rosenberg. He was an affable and social man with a good sense of humor and business. He was a favorite among the community's children, loved by his own many nieces and nephews and known to all as "Uncle Pete". He was also known for speaking Czech and keeping many Czech traditions alive in his store. The business was a prosperous one and the couple was able to retire in 1955 and return to Caldwell. Ever industrious, the now retired Drgac became renown as an exceptional gardener. Going back to his farming heritage, he was especially known for his fruit trees, vegetables and flowers. Stories are told of seven pound turnips and a grafted fruit tree that produced both pears and apples.

Francis Drgac died in 1962. Married for over fifty years, but without children, Pete found himself without his one true partner. He was almost eighty years old and the experience of his wife's death was difficult. However, after a few years of bereavement, the energetic and creative aspects of Pete Drgac's spirit were revived, not in the form of gardening, but of painting. The oft told story of the genesis of Drgac's late life painting career begins with his having built a flower box. After adding some decorative painted flowers, he was not satisfied with the results. He then set out with his usual determination to become a better painter. He was quoted as saying, "Now some folks might laugh at this, but I felt assurance that if I would practice, I would be able to draw those flowers and anything else I wanted." Having stayed deeply connected to his Czech heritage seems to have provided a stylistic basis for his painting. The use of bright primary colors and strong graphic images have much in common with earlier decorative Czech art forms found in paintings, ceramics and textiles, as seen below Drgac's own floral image at the left. Drgac's painting also has cultural references and influences found in the beautifully ornamented Czech painted churches of Central Texas. Though he would deny awareness of any higher motivations or purposes in his art, it clearly served to connect his deeply cherished Czech traditions of language and craft with the present. His almost abstract stylistic and graphic representation of his subjects is what pushes the boundaries of these traditions. The painting featured at the lead of this article is quintessential Drgac. Painted with enamel on poster board over a white wash, Drgac's particular style was to present a seeming visual inventory of the essential elements of the scene he was painting. The barnyard animals and garden roses are separated from their natural landscape, which is replaced with a small abstracted green band to suggest the ground, and the composition is completed with decorative polka dots.

Pete Drgac continued to paint prolifically for the rest of his life. He was featured in the local Caldwell paper which led to a degree of local and regional noteriety, but Pete was steadfastly modest about his painting. He gave many away to family and friends, selling others to visitors for only the price of the materials he estimated was involved in their production.

After his death in 1976 at the age of 93, his work was subsequently exhibited in 1995 in "Tree of Life", the inaugural exhibition of The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, and in the 1997 exhibition "Spirited Journeys" which featured self taught artists of Texas.

    Obituary:

Mildred Drgac Crnkovic, 89, of Cook's Point, was called home on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009.

Funeral services are set for 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at the New Tabor Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at the Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Mrs. Crnkovic was born on April 11, 1919, in Cooks Point community, the daughter of John K. and Stanislava Skrivanek Drgac and was baptized at the Cooks Point Brethren Church. She graduated from Sam Houston State University and spent the next 40 years as an elementary teacher in the Freeport, Mobile, Bryan, Cooks Point and Snook schools.

Mildred was teaching in Freeport in the early 1940's and during the summers she worked on the USO staff where she met and married William "Bill" Crnkovic. They were married on July 22, 1944, at St John's Catholic Church in Gulfport, Mississippi.

After the war, they moved back to Cooks Point and raised their family of three boys: William Jr., John, and Joe.

Along with her husband, they owned Beltone Hearing Aid Service in Bryan for over 30 years. Mildred would teach school during the day and helped with the business in the afternoons and on weekends.

She eventually retired from teaching school but still went to the office everyday up to the time health problems prevented it.

Her son, Joe, still operates the business. Even so, family was most important. She still found the time to keep a house and cook meals. Thus, very few meals were eaten out.

Every Sunday all year she got up at 5 a.m. to cook a full meal for lunch and dinner. Family and friends would begin to stop by mid-morning for her chicken drumsticks. The main meal would be ready for all her family at noon. Broccoli and rice casserole, spaghetti, and her sweet tea were family favorites.

She could be found playing 42 as a pastime. Gardening was another of her favorites. From the vegetable garden out back to that African violet she somehow grew on an end table (out of the sunlight) in the den, plants loved her green thumb.

All of this and more made her a wonderful mother and will be missed. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks for all the prayers, warm wishes, food, and memorials.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, John K. and Stanislava Drgac; husband, William "Bill" Crnkovic; sisters, Stanislava Drgac, Annie Laurie Drgac and Lydia Drgac; and her brother, Alvin Drgac.

Survivors include her three sons and two daughters-in-law, William Jr. and Janet Crnkovic of Cook's Point, Joe and Lillian Crnkovic of Cook's Point and John Crnkovic of Austin; six grandchildren, Chris Crnkovic, Brandi Crnkovic, Nicole Crnkovic, Kimberly Crnkovic, Joseph Crnkovic, and Tanya Reyna; and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers will be Chris Crnkovic, Joseph Crnkovic Jr., Mark Evans, Kevin Faust, Sam Polasek, and Chad Robinson. Honorary pallbearer will be her nephew Douglas Drgac.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cooks Point Brethren Church.

    Obituary:

Melvin Ernest Pertl passed away peacefully, at home with family on February 7, 2022, at the age of 93, ending a long battle with bladder cancer. With a renewed body, his spirit is rejoicing in heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Melvin was born on June 2, 1928, to Stanley and Annie (Sebesta) Pertl. He grew up in a Czech family with five siblings, Clarence, Stanley, Naomi, Joel and Joyce farming in San Antonio Prairie, TX. He attended the Red Hollow School and then Caldwell High until 1944. In his youth, Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and cousins.

On November 29, 1950, Melvin was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Morganfield, Kentucky as a Medic (Orthopedic Technician). He was honorably discharged from Camp Breckinridge, on November 29, 1952. On January 7, 1953, Melvin went to work as an Operator for the Olin Mathison Chemical Company in Pasadena, TX, which later became Pasadena Chemical Company, owned by Mobil Oil Company.

On August 29, 1953, he married Dorothy Faye Baxter, with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage. Together they raised three children, Brad, Larry, and Trina, and resided in Houston, TX for thirty years. As a strong family man and avid outdoorsman, they would often return to the country, around Deanville and Franklin, to visit family, hunt, fish, and help where needed, during Melvin?s time off.

In 1984, after retiring from Mobil, Melvin and Dorothy moved to Deanville, TX, where they have resided for the past 38 years. Together they farmed and raised cattle. Melvin?s strong work ethic and love of the outdoors kept him busy tending to his garden, cattle, and land. He also dabbled with raising pigs and guineafowl. They especially enjoyed when their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren came to visit. As a child of the great-depression, Melvin instilled in his children the importance of always working hard, being thrifty and showing kindness to others.

Melvin is survived by his wife Dorothy Pertl, sister Joyce Thatcher (husband Scott) and brother Joel Pertl (wife Melinda), sons Brad Pertl (wife Martha), Larry Pertl (wife Connie) and daughter Trina Binyon (husband Bryan), grandchildren: Jennifer Stone, Jamie Borkowski, Anna Pertl-Regan, Gina Davis, Taylor Binyon, Audrey Binyon, Brittany Rocha, Christy Hicks, and Jimmy Fudge, fourteen great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Notes:

    Obituary:

Joel Lonnie Pertl, 78, of Deanville, Texas, went home to be with his Lord on October 7, 2022, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. A public visitation will be held in his honor on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM followed by a Funeral Service at 2:00 PM in the chapel at St. John's Lutheran Church, Deanville, Texas.

Joel was born November 19, 1943, at home on the family farm in Deanville to Stanley and Annie (Sebesta) Pertl. He was raised, accepted Christ as his personal savior, was baptized, and attended church at First Assembly of God in Caldwell until he could no longer drive. He loved God with his whole heart. Although the disease took control of his mind, it never took God from his heart. We would often find him with his hands raised and singing to Jesus; even though his communication skills had declined.

Joel and his wife Melinda (Bell) Pertl were married in Spring Branch, TX on June 6, 1966. He and Melinda were sweethearts at first kiss. They courted for a year, married, and seven years later started their family. They had three children, Brent Pertl, April (Pertl) Drew, and Tisha (Pertl) Wathen.

After graduating from Caldwell High School in 1962, Joel's first job was at Alenco in Bryan, TX. Next, he joined the Army Reserves in November 1964 and served his basic training at Fort Polk, LA. He was honorably discharged after serving his 6-year term in June of 1970.

Joel retired from Alcoa with plans that he and Melinda would travel the United States with a camper. The diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease, changed these plans.

Joel was a lover of the land. He loved vegetable gardening, growing fruit trees, grafting Pecan trees, flowers, and had a green thumb. He enjoyed cutting fresh, beautiful, bouquets of pink roses for the love of his life, Melinda. He loved farming at the family farm, growing hay, raising cows, clearing mesquite bushes by hand, and was known for having the cleanest fence lines in the area. He loved fast cars, slow antique A and T models, and he also rebuilt/repaired them, but fishing was a huge passion; he made his own perch traps, ran trot lines and seined his own bait. He never wanted to brag about how big the fish were (some 70 pounds) and would not enter competitions because he didn't ever want to reveal his secret spots. He was always generous in sharing his catch with friends and neighbors. To reciprocate, the women whom he shared with, would bake many delicious desserts and deliver them to Melinda saying, "they were for Joel".

Joel was preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Annie (Sebesta) Pertl, his siblings; Stanley Pertl, Curtis and Naomi (Pertl) Rathjen, Clarence and Bobbie (Walker)Pertl, and Melvin Pertl.

He is survived by his wife Melinda Pertl, his twin sister Joyce Thatcher, his son Brent Pertl, his daughters April (Pertl) Drew and spouse Blake Drew & Tisha (Pertl) Wathen and spouse Kyle Wathen, his grandchildren Ansley Pertl, Jacob Wathen, Audrey Wathen, Alexa Drew, and Ava Drew.
Joel will be remembered as a very simple man that loved the simple things in life: faith, family, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 W 26th St, Bryan, TX 77803.

(Published in The Eagle on September 28, 2023)

    Obituary:

Joyce Pertl Thatcher passed away peacefully in her sleep at home next to her beloved husband, Scott, of 52 years, at the age of 79.

Joyce was born on November 19, 1943, at home on the family farm in Caldwell to Stanley and Annie (Sebesta) Pertl. She grew up in a Czech family with five siblings: Clarence, Melvin, Stanley, Naomi and her twin brother, Joel.

Joyce spent her childhood becoming familiar with the farm life. Although it wasn't her ideal chore, on hot days, she would help pick cotton in the fields filling the heavy cotton sack. She loved gathering the eggs out of the chicken coup and would hide them under the bed to avoid them being crushed by her twin brother, who might have gotten a little rambunctious here and there. Her very favorite thing to do would be to crawl up and take a nap next to her Grandma Sebesta, who she would translate for Czech to English when they would go into town.

Joyce was a charter member of First Assembly of God in Caldwell, Texas and would become the church pianist where she would have many requests to play hymns, specifically Mansion Over the Hilltop, and sing with her brother, Joel.

Joyce graduated from Caldwell High School in 1962 and was employed by the local drug store in Bryan. She eventually went to work for the Tectonophysics Department at Texas A&M University. She was used as an advertising model for a few publications within the department she worked for. Her firstborn, Jeff, blessed her life in 1967. On a fun night out with her friends in 1969, she caught the eye of a handsome young man in a lime green Barracuda that pulled up next to the green Maverick that Joyce was in. It was then that Scott Thatcher told his buddy, "I'm going to marry that girl". After an innocent chase through town, Scott eventually met Joyce and they started dating. During their courtship, Scott joined the Air Force and left for basic training in San Antonio and received orders to be stationed in San Bernardino, California. Upon receiving a 1 week leave, Scott called Joyce and told her that he was coming back to marry her and they married on August 11, 1971 and left for San Bernardino the next day. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1972, Scott and Joyce left California to begin their life in Texas.

Joyce once again secured a job with the Texas A&M University system working for the Vice President of Student Affairs. Scott and Joyce welcomed their first daughter, Alise in 1976, their second daughter, Kristal, in 1978 and their surprise baby girl, Jana in 1979. Joyce finally made the decision to become a homemaker, running the daily affairs of managing her bustling household. She taught music at Calvary Baptist Church for elementary students, led neighborhood bible lessons at the community park for the neighborhood friends and was involved as a Missionette teacher at College Heights Assembly of God in Bryan. Joyce was PTA room mom for all her children and supported her girls through all the years of cheer, dance and school functions. She loved attending a weekly ladies Bible Study and lunch with her friends. She gained two sons-in-law when Alise married Brad Levens and Kristal married Kevin Beachy. Joyce became a grandmother in 2003 when her first grandson, Braeden, was born. Her love for her grandchildren was multiplied by 5 when Danica, Landon, Carter, Brenham and Adaline were born. Her grandkids were the joy of her life. She was a dedicated caregiver of her diabetic son, Jeff and definitely knew how to care for him better than any physician.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Annie (Sebesta) Pertl, her siblings: Clarence, Melvin, Stanley, Naomi (Pertl) Rathjen and Joel Pertl and her son, Jeffrey Todd Thatcher. She is survived by her husband, Scott Thatcher, her daughters Alise (Thatcher) Levens and spouse Brad Levens, Kristal (Thatcher) Beachy and spouse Kevin Beachy, Jana Thatcher, and her grandchildren, Braeden Levens, Landon Levens, Danica Beachy, Carter Beachy, Brenham Beachy and Adaline Beachy.
