    Obituary:

Mildred Drgac Crnkovic, 89, of Cook's Point, was called home on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009.

Funeral services are set for 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at the New Tabor Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at the Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Mrs. Crnkovic was born on April 11, 1919, in Cooks Point community, the daughter of John K. and Stanislava Skrivanek Drgac and was baptized at the Cooks Point Brethren Church. She graduated from Sam Houston State University and spent the next 40 years as an elementary teacher in the Freeport, Mobile, Bryan, Cooks Point and Snook schools.

Mildred was teaching in Freeport in the early 1940's and during the summers she worked on the USO staff where she met and married William "Bill" Crnkovic. They were married on July 22, 1944, at St John's Catholic Church in Gulfport, Mississippi.

After the war, they moved back to Cooks Point and raised their family of three boys: William Jr., John, and Joe.

Along with her husband, they owned Beltone Hearing Aid Service in Bryan for over 30 years. Mildred would teach school during the day and helped with the business in the afternoons and on weekends.

She eventually retired from teaching school but still went to the office everyday up to the time health problems prevented it.

Her son, Joe, still operates the business. Even so, family was most important. She still found the time to keep a house and cook meals. Thus, very few meals were eaten out.

Every Sunday all year she got up at 5 a.m. to cook a full meal for lunch and dinner. Family and friends would begin to stop by mid-morning for her chicken drumsticks. The main meal would be ready for all her family at noon. Broccoli and rice casserole, spaghetti, and her sweet tea were family favorites.

She could be found playing 42 as a pastime. Gardening was another of her favorites. From the vegetable garden out back to that African violet she somehow grew on an end table (out of the sunlight) in the den, plants loved her green thumb.

All of this and more made her a wonderful mother and will be missed. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks for all the prayers, warm wishes, food, and memorials.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, John K. and Stanislava Drgac; husband, William "Bill" Crnkovic; sisters, Stanislava Drgac, Annie Laurie Drgac and Lydia Drgac; and her brother, Alvin Drgac.

Survivors include her three sons and two daughters-in-law, William Jr. and Janet Crnkovic of Cook's Point, Joe and Lillian Crnkovic of Cook's Point and John Crnkovic of Austin; six grandchildren, Chris Crnkovic, Brandi Crnkovic, Nicole Crnkovic, Kimberly Crnkovic, Joseph Crnkovic, and Tanya Reyna; and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers will be Chris Crnkovic, Joseph Crnkovic Jr., Mark Evans, Kevin Faust, Sam Polasek, and Chad Robinson. Honorary pallbearer will be her nephew Douglas Drgac.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cooks Point Brethren Church.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Strickland Funeral Home, 530 Hwy 36 South, Caldwell, TX.
