    Pioneer Woman Of This County Is Buried Today

    Mrs. Martha Katherine German, aged 72 years, 2 months and 10 days, died Sunday morning at 9 o'clock at her home near College Station. A resident of Brazos county for the past 62 years, Mrs. German was one of its early settlers. She was a native Texan, born in Burleson county Aug. 20, 1863.

    She is survived by two sons and two daughters: F. N. German of Wellborn; John German of Houston; Mrs. W. D. Burkhalter of College Station and Mrs. J. F. Gree of Rock Prairie. One sister also survives her, Mrs. Sallie Ross of College Station.

    The funeral services were held from her late home this afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Rev. J. P. Brown of Bryan, in charge. Interment was made in the old Millican cemetery where other members of the family sleep. McCulloch-Dansby were in charge of all funeral arrangements.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Zeannie Greer, 87, of 1107 Esther Blvd. in Bryan will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Callaway-Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Thomas Mulberry officiating. Burial will follow in College Station City Cemetery.

    Mrs. Greer died Wednesday in a local hospital. She was born April 3, 1888 in Brazos County and lived here all her life.

    Survivors include two sons, Curtis Greer and Milton Greer, both of Bryan; two daughters, Mrs. Otis Robertson of College Station and Mrs. M.L. Sargent of Austin; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Burkhalter and Mrs. Inez Warren, both of Bryan; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

    Pallbearers will be Glen Greer, Fletcher German, Jerry Warren, Lanny Burkhalter, Aubrey Arnold and Joe Biasatti.

    Former Resident of Millican Is Victim of Wreck

    William G. German, born in Millican November 14, 1889, was brought back to Millican Tuesday afternoon for burial, after having been killed in Houston Monday in a car wreck as he went to his work.

    Funeral services were held at the depot in Millican at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, and interment was made at the Millican cemetery. A large number of friends of the deceased were present at the services, which were conducted by the pastor of the Wellborn Baptist church, Rev. J.P. Brown.

    Assisting Rev. Brown were members of the Earl Graham Post of the American Legion. They were: Henry Schovajsa, Will Dowling, Harry Estill, Raymond Jones, Albert Goodman, Antone Krenek, and R.W. Ivy.

    The deceased is survived by his mother, two brothers and two sisters.

    Sam German, a well known young man of the Rock Prairie community, died Sunday morning after a short illness. He was a splendid young man, active, industrious, and belonged to a well known family of the southern portion of the county. He had just recently passed his 21st birthday. The funeral was held at Millican this afternoon.

    Clara E. Burkhalter

    Clara E. Burkhalter, 82, of Bryan died Saturday in a local nursing home after a short illness.

    Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Bob Owens of Second Baptist Church of College Station and the Rev. W.A. McDonald, retired, officiated. Burial was in Wellborn Cemetery.

    Mrs. Burkhalter was born in Millican and had lived in Brazos County all her life. She and her late husband, W.D. Burkhalter, donated the land and building to found the Second Baptist Church of College Station. She was a Sunday school teacher and was active in other church activities at Second Baptist Church.

    Survivors include a son, Lanny Ray Burkhalter of Stafford; a daughter, Ruth B. Grumbles of Bryan; two granddaughters, Sue Abate of Hearne, Kay Perry of Bryan; three grandsons, Craig Burkhalter, Chris Burkhalter, and Cory Burkhalter, all of Stafford; and six great-grandchildren.

    Vivian Catherine (Greer) Robertson, 102, gained her Heavenly wings on August 18, 2017 in Round Rock, TX. Friends and family are invited to a time of visitation from 9 am until 11 am, Tuesday August 22, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center in Bryan. Funeral services will follow at 11 am at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center. Interment will be at the College Station City Cemetery.

    Vivian was born on October 28, 1914 in the Rock Prairie community to Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Greer and Annie Zeannie (German) Greer. She married the love of her life, Otis Terrell Robertson, on September 4, 1937. From then on they were inseparable. After Otis' death in 1992, Vivian moved to Austin, TX to take care of her sister Ophie until her passing in 1998. Even though she lived in Austin, she was an Aggie by heart and enjoyed watching Texas A&M Football. Vivian loved to be outdoors, and loved gardening and fishing with Otis along the Brazos River. But most importantly, she loved to be with family. Her many nieces and nephews meant the world to her.

    She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Otis Robertson; sister Ophie (Greer) Sargent; brother Curtis Greer; nephew Rodney Greer; nieces Deborah (Greer) Davis and Beverly (Greer) Russo; and great-niece Tonia Biasatti

    Milton Greer, 100, of Bryan, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2020, in Bryan. Graveside services are scheduled for 10 am, Monday, August 10, 2020, at Steep Hollow Cemetery with Pastor Ray Marshall officiating the service. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers, Bryan-College Station.

    Milton was born to Jeff Greer and Zinnie German Greer in College Station. He was a member of Steep Hollow Baptist, Cedar Creek Masonic Lodge No. 300; A M & F M, Ivanhoe Commander No. 8, Bryan Chapter #222, Order of the Eastern Star. Milton served in the Navy in the Pacific, on Siapain & Tinnian from 1943 to 1945. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, AP Ribbon, American Theater, and Victory Ribbons, and Battle Star.

    He is preceded in death by his parents, Jeff and Zinnie Greer; his son Rodney Greer; his brother, Curtis Greer; his sisters, Ophie Greer and Vivian Robertson.

    Milton is survived by his daughter Sheryl Greer; his grandsons, Wiley Wiggins, and Travis Greer; numerous nieces and nephews.

    NAVASOTA - Graveside services for Curtis J. Greer, 71, of Navasota will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Wheat Cemetery in Millican.

    Russell Hudson will officiate. Arrangements are by Nobles Funeral Home.

    Mr. Greer died at home Tuesday afternoon.

    He was born in Wellborn and had lived in Navasota for several years. He was a painter who served in the U.S. military during World War II.

    Mr. Greer was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Janelle Greer, on July 10, 1991.

    Survivors include a son, Jefferson Greer of Navasota; five daughters, Susan Hibner of North Zulch, Linda McCarty of Capitan, N.M., Nelda Nichols of Navasota, Beverly Russo of Bryan and Billie Jean Brubaker of Houston; a brother, Milton Greer of Bryan; two sisters, Offie Sargeant and Vivian Robertson, both of Austin; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

    Gladys Koerth, 88, of San Antonio, passed away January 24, 2013. She was born March 28, 1924, to the late Fletcher German and Martha Warren German. She was preceded in death by her parents: husband Dr. C.J. Koerth, son, Charles Koerth III, and brother, Fletcher German of College Station. She is survived by: two sons, Paul Koerth and wife Belva, and David Koerth and wife Donna, one daughter, Kay Koerth Searson and husband John, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three sisters: Cathy Holligan of Bryan, TX, Elizabeth Boyd of College Station, TX, and Mary Huckaby of Victoria, TX, and one brother, Sam German of Thompsonville, IL. She was a member of the Bexar Chapter #616 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Primera Mexican Baptist Church (Formerly Manor Baptist Church).     Fletcher German passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2010 in College Station. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, February 4, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan. Funeral services are set for 1 p.m., Friday, February 5, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 220 Rock Prairie Rd., College Station, with Pastor David Elton officiating. A private interment for the family will follow at College Station Cemetery.

    Fletcher was born August 5, 1928, to Fletcher German Sr. and Mattie Warren German in Wellborn, Texas. Fletcher grew up in the Wellborn community and graduated from A&M Consolidated High School. He began working for the Texas A&M Physical Plant as a painter in 1951 and served as Paint Foreman for several years before retiring in 1983. Fletcher also was a volunteer fireman for Texas A&M University serving the City of College Station and south Brazos County for 20 years. He was a member of the Adam Rayder Mason Lodge of Wellborn and Sons of Hermann Lodge 99 of Bryan.

    Fletcher was a lifelong member of A&M Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder and helped organize the church is food pantry. He also served on the planning and building committee for the Covenant Presbyterian Church in College Station. Fletcher's passions included hunting, fishing, playing music, and family gatherings.

    Preceding Fletcher in death were his parents, Fletcher German Sr. and Mattie Kaechle, and his first wife, Gloria Burke German.

    Survivors include his wife, Lena Whitsel German; son, Dan German and wife LaNell; daughter, Babs Hogan and husband Dan; step-daughters, Susie Brushaber and husband Merrill, Wanda Zwernemann and husband Dennis, Jeanie Gold and husband Alvin, Mildred Anderson and husband Andy; brother, Sam German and wife Louise; sisters Gladys Koerth, Gaynell Boyd and husband Charles, Cathy Holligan and husband Byron, Mary Lois Huckaby; step-sisters, Juanita Jones, Ruby Joy, Mary Martin; step-brothers, Clyde Carrie and Lonnie Carrie; 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Fletcher's life truly reflected his faith in God through tireless efforts to serve his church, community, friends, and family.

    Sam German, 89 of Paulton, passed away at 11:42 a.m., Thursday, May 16, 2019 at his residence.

    Sam was born November 12, 1929 in Wellborn, Texas to Fletcher and Martha Ella (Warren) German, Sr. He married Florence Louise Lasley on February 23, 1957 in Anderson, Texas. Together they have shared 62 years of marriage.

    Sam was retired, having been employed by E.T. Simonds Constructions for many years. Before he moved to Illinois, he worked for Butler, Jones and Williams Construction in College Station, Texas. He also worked at the Texas A&M University Beef Center. Sam served his country honorably by serving in the United States Army during the Korean War.

    Sam was a member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church near Paulton. He was also a member of Laborers International Local #773. He enjoyed welding and tinkering on his farm. He shoed horses from the age of 14 until the age of 82. Sam enjoyed spending time outdoors deer hunting. His greatest passion was raising cattle and working with his horses. He loved to compete and judge horse shows and rodeos.

    Survivors include his wife, Louise; five children, Russell E. (Nancy) Odum of Bluford, Caron (Scottie) Harris of West Frankfort, Catherine (Gary) Mosley of Bryan, TX, Dennis (Ruby) Odum of Benton and Lloyd (Maureen) German of Akin; two sisters, Catherine Holligan of Bryan, TX and Gaynell Boyd of Sommerville, TX. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

    Sam was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jessie German, Jr; brother, Fetcher German, Jr; two sisters, Gladys Koreth and Marylois Huckabee.

    Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Pyle Funeral Home with Rev. John Howat officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery near Paulton. Military honors will be accorded by the Marion VFW Post 1301 and members of the Illinois National Guard Military Honors team.

    Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Monday at the funeral home.

    Funeral services for Billy Burkhalter, 41, of 2908 Montana, are scheduled at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Funeral Chapel.

    Mr. Burkhalter died Monday in a local hospital. The Rev. W.A. McDonald of the Second Baptist Church in College Station is scheduled to officiate. Burial will be in the Wellborn Cemetery.

    Mr. Burkhalter was born July 31, 1929, in College Station and was a lifetime resident of Brazos County. He was an insurance agent and served in the Korean War. Mr. Burkhalter was a member of the First Baptist Church in College Station.

    Survivors include one brother, Lanny Burkhalter of Houston; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Grumbles of Bryan; and his mother, Mrs. W.D. Burkhalter of Bryan.

    Born May 21, 1941, in College Station, Texas, Lanny is survived by his three sons, Craig Burkhalter and his wife Sarah; Chris Burkhalter and his wife Kristi; and, Cory Burkhalter and his wife Jackie; as well as 12 grandchildren, and his partner of 24 years, Dan Dyer. He was preceded in death by his father, Willie D. Burkhalter and mother, Clara E. Burkhalter; brothers, Willie D. Burkhalter, Jr., and Billy Burkhalter; sister, Ruth Burkhalter Slama Grumbles.

    A 1959 graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan, Texas, Lanny attended Sam Houston State Teachers College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in advertising in 1964. Lanny moved to Houston upon graduating from college and worked for TRW for several years before becoming an executive with Synercom Technology, Inc., through the 70s and early 80s. Lanny transitioned into the oil and gas industry in the mid 80s, excelling as a facilities director at Huffco, VICO, and Apache Corp. all based in the nation's fourth largest city. Known for his proclivity in the garden, Lanny enjoyed his flowers and his vegetables during his retirement, as well as taking his beloved dog, Sam, on daily excursions around the neighborhood.

    A celebration of Lanny's life will begin on Sunday, May 1, with an open visitation from 6 to 8 pm at Klein Funeral Home, 9719 Wortham Blvd., Houston, TX 77065. His funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 2, at the funeral home administered by Pastor David Welch of Bear Creek Baptist Church. Lanny's interment will be 2 pm Monday at the Wellborn Cemetery in his hometown of College Station.

    Rodney Greer, 64, of Bryan, passed away at his home Sunday, November 13, 2011. A graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, November 18, at Smetana Cemetery.

    Rodney was born December 2, 1946 in Bryan to Milton and Dorothy Greer. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed spending his time fishing and hunting. Rodney was known for being a very loving person and devoted father.

    He was preceded in death by his mother.

    ANDERSON - Mrs. Deborah Ann Davis, 30, of Route 1 in Anderson, died Sunday night in a Navasota hospital from injuries sustained in a auto accident.

    Services will be today at 2 p.m. at the Willow Hole Chapel in Madison County, with the Rev. Glenn Connors, pastor of the Rock Prairie Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Willow Hole Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

    Davis, born in Bryan, was a lifetime resident of Grimes and Brazos counties. She attended A&M Consolidated High School in College Station.

    CAR ACCIDENT KILLS EX-CARBONDALE MAN

    Jessie Samuel German, Jr., 20, of 413A Stasany, College Station, Texas, formerly of Carbondale, died in an auto accident early Monday, May 14, 1979, near College Station.

    Mr. German was graduated in 1977 from Carbondale Community High School. He had played football at CCHS for four years. A graduate of the CCHS building trades occupation program, he was employed as a carpenter.

    He was born June 17, 1958, in College Station, Texas, to Jessie Samuel and Florence Louise Lasley German. his parents, of Bryan, Texas, survive.

    Also surviving are two sisters, Karon Elaine Harris of Thompsonville and Catherine Mosley of Bryan, Texas; three brothers, Sgt.     Richard (Dicky) Don Dennington, a native of Shawnee, Oklahoma and long time resident of Somerville, Texas died Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at the age of 68 at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan, Texas surrounded by his loving family. Service are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Cetners, Bryan-College Station.

    A Graveside Service for Dicky was held on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Wellborn Community Cemetery in Wellborn, Texas. The service was officiated by Rev. Bruce Bergthold.

    Dicky was born on February 13, 1950 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to John Milton Dale Dennington and Elizabeth German Dennington. Soon after his birth Dicky's father who was in the military was transferred to San Clemente, California. Throughout Dicky's childhood the family lived in numerous places including College Station and Houston where he attended grade school and Furr High School. In high school Dicky belonged to the FFA where he proudly won a blue ribbon for one of his entries.

    Upon graduating from high school Dicky entered the United States Air Force. Following his stint in the USAF Dicky returned home.

    Dicky was known to be a very sweet little boy and a kind and gentle person who enjoyed fishing at Lake Somerville and Galveston. He loved his family and the companionship of his cat, Toby.

    Dicky is preceded in death by his grandparents, his father Dale Dennington, and his brother Robin Dennington.

    Those left to cherish his memory are his mother Elizabeth Boyd of Somerville; sisters, Peggy and David Melton of Warda, Leah Menchaca of College Station, Cynthia and Bruce Bergthold of Geneseo, Illinois, Jennifer Davis and Gary Bachert of Somerville; brothers John and Sayla Dennington of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Ralph Plagens Jr. of Somerville; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

    Kerry and Vicki were engaged on December 23,1966 and married July 15, 1967. Together, they moved to Houston where Kerry attended Houston Baptist University, continuing to play basketball.

    Kerry graduated from Houston Baptist and started his career in the tax business as a Tax Accessor Collector for Aldine ISD. He then worked as the Houston Manager for Property Tax Service. Upon leaving PTS, Kerry started his own company, AVTAX, as President and owner, with partners Paul Hawn and Charlie Pennington. Kerry was a deacon at Forest Cove Baptist Church and helped with children's Bible study classes. Kerry enjoyed barbecuing, growing tomatoes, and making his famous hot sauce.

    Vicki worked for Harris County tax office and attended night school. She then worked part time for Humble ISD tax office, and Forest Cove Baptist Church. Vicki's sole ambition was to be an artist, get married, and have a family. The highlight of their life was realized when Rise! was born. She started Pastor of Care ministry at Forest Cove Baptist Church which included small groups, premarital counseling, and intercessory prayer. She taught Sunday school classes, and many Bible studies, including Joy of Living. Vicki was a leader of the Stephen Ministries. She also enjoyed gardening and was involved with Kingwood Garden Club. Kerry and Vicki were members of Empty Nesters' Bible Study class at Second Baptist Church, North Campus. Together, they enjoyed entertaining their friends and family and sharing their love for the Lord.

    They were preceded in death by Kerry's parents Vernon and Billye Roper and Vicki's parents Searcy and Eleanor German. Survivors include their daughter Rise' Jones and husband Glen, grandchildren Chase Vaughan and Eleanor Jones, Kerry's sister Debby Leake and husband Pierce Jr., brother Randy Roper and wife Faye, Vicki's brothers Johnnie German and wife Robyn, and Rick German and wife Barbara and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
