    Obituary:

We greatly regret to learn of the death of Mr. John B. Campbell, who died at the residence of Mr. G. W. Phelps, in Red Land, on last Friday, aged 72 years and 3 days. Mr. Campbell was an old citizen of Bossier parish -- a strong man; honest, sincere and popular. The parish suffers in his death the loss of a man of fine character and standing powers, a useful man in every respect. A good citizen; a Christian gentleman and a gallant Confederate soldier has been called to give the countersign at the gates of Heaven.

    Obituary:

Died: On the 26th of September, 1866, at the residence of his father, Mr. J.B. Campbell, in this parish, WILLIE A. CAMPBELL, aged 9 years, 8 months and 19 days.

"Kind parents, it is hard for you to surrender the objects most cherished in life; yet, the decree of Him who doeth all things well, has gone forth: "Dust thou art and unto dust shalt thou return;" and you can but bow in meek submission, with a christian fortitude, to His dread alternative. Little WILLIE is gone! One of your dearest household jewels has been snatched by the ever unerring hand of death, from the family circle, to adorn a brighter sphere than this. Before realizing the sterner duties of life--or walking alone the rugged way--an All-wise Providence, has transplanted WILLIE'S genial soul from this, to realms of blissful immortality. With the implicit faith of a child, he quietly folded his arms in sleep to awake amid the realities of a happier and better world. He is--
"Gone with the wealth of love which dwelt
Heart-kept, with holy thoughts and high--
Gone, as as the clouds of evening melt
Beyond the dark and solemn sky."

SHREVEPORT, LA - "Come!" The Heavenly Father embraced His beloved daughter, Lucy Ethel Houston Perkins, 71, as she went to be with Him and other family members awaiting her in His eternal Presence, Saturday morning, October 28, 2000.

Working with children was her greatest love. She loved all of them and invested 50 years in their welfare. Lucy could plumb the depths of their dilemmas, unlock their fragile minds and flood their souls with the light of knowledge and the love of God. She could challenge the brightest to incredible heights of learning and pull the poorer students from their places of low self-esteem and cause them to walk confidently. She was a master of the Montessori method of teaching and mothered the movement in Louisiana. She was founder and principal of the following schools: East Haven Baptist 1957-1960; Young World 1960-1963 (both in Houston, TX), Montessori School for Shreveport 1963-1978; New Life Montessori 1978-1983; LaFollo Reading Tutoring Program 1983-1987 and Christian Center School 1987-1996. Following many months of illness, Lucy walked into the church sanctuary Sunday morning, a week ago and exclaimed to the congregation, "It's wonderful to be with my family again." She and Otis, her partner in marriage for 53 years, prayed at the altar as she led what would be her final public prayer. Lucy spent most of her life championing peace between races and religions.

Special appreciation is extended to the entire staff of Willis-Knighton Medical Center for their care and personal attention.

Family members celebrating her life include, husband Otis; children, Dan and Pam; grandchildren, Jonathan and Kristina; great-granddaughter, Lillian; and sisters, Elaine Akins; Esther Beeman; and Carolyn Hermes along with numerous nieces and nephews whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

    Obituary:

Carolyn Houston Hermes, 83, of Shreveport, passed away on August 18, 2017. She was born in Longview, Texas and grew up in Shreveport. She and her husband, Wayne Joseph Hermes of Shreveport, were married in 1948 where they raised their family. She entered the Catholic Church in 1955 and together they were active parishioners at several Catholic churches in Shreveport (St. Theresa, Sacred Heart, and St. John's Cathedral) as well as in Monroe (La.), Houston, and Longview. At St. Matthew's in Longview they were daily communicants for more than twenty-five years, devoted supporters of parish adoration, and dedicated to various charitable activities in the parish.

As a young wife and mother, Mrs. Hermes devoted her energies to the numerous challenges of establishing a home and raising a large family. Always in charge of family finances, she mastered the art of stretching paychecks to provide for their children's private school education and many activities. Although she herself left high school early, all her sons graduated from Jesuit high schools in Shreveport and Houston, and her daughter from Saint Vincent Academy in Shreveport. All received college educations. Later, she attained her high school equivalency diploma and even began taking college classes. She directed the summer camp for Shreveport's Montessori school (owned by her sister, Lucy) and she taught early childhood classes in the Head Start program and at the Little Red Schoolhouse in Monroe, La. She later worked as a Mary Kay Cosmetics sales lady with her sister, Esther. She was also recognized for years of volunteer service at M. D. Anderson in Houston.

In her middle years, she took up various pursuits like dancing, painting, and family genealogy. She documented several generations of family lines for both the Hermes/Disiere and the Houston/Smith families, maintaining correspondence and occasional visits with relatives across the Southwest, and even in Switzerland. Above all, throughout her life, faith in God and family came first. She took great delight in family gatherings, especially at Christmastime when her children and grandchildren would return home for the annual family gathering. She was energized by the challenge of providing food, lodging, and activities for 40-50 family members each year.

After Wayne's retirement they traveled extensively, often by RV, including a memorable trip to Alaska. They also visited Hawaii, Mexico, Italy, and Switzerland. Especially important to them were the numerous trips around the country to visit their children and grandchildren, and to be part of their many first communions, confirmations, and graduation ceremonies. They moved back to Shreveport from Longview in 2015.

Mrs. Hermes was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wayne, her parents, Lonnie Houston and Eunice Smith Houston, and five sisters, Lucy Perkins, Elaine Akins, Esther Beeman, and twins who died as infants. Four half-sisters and two half-brothers also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her eight children: Terry Hermes (Lisa) of Birmingham, Alabama; Wayne "Dubba" Hermes, Jr. (Sharon) of Durango, Colorado; Victoria Hermes Willis of Crosby, Texas; Dr. Ronald Hermes of Shreveport; Timothy Hermes (Niki) of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania; Patrick Hermes of Arlington, Virginia; Reverend Richard Hermes, S.J., of Tampa, Florida; Lawrence Hermes (Lara) of Katy, Texas; twenty-one grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She will be remembered by relatives and friends as a devoted wife and mother, whose indomitable spirit, optimistic outlook, and strong faith encouraged those around her.

Honoring Mrs. Hermes as pallbearers will be her grandsons Chris Willis, Justin Hermes, Jake Hermes, Dylan Hermes, Jack Hermes, Brendan Hermes, Zach Hermes, and Ryan Hermes. Three grandsons, Colin Hermes, Andrew Hermes, and her oldest grandson, Clinton Hermes (residing in Qatar), will be honorary pallbearers.

A visitation will be held Monday, August 21, 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, Shreveport. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John Berchmans Cathedral on Tuesday, August 22, at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Forest Park East Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Mrs. Hermes to the financial aid program at Jesuit High School, 4701 N. Himes Ave., Tampa, FL 33614.

Esther Lavenia Houston Beeman 9/9/1935 to 6/20/2013

Esther's life touched so many. She was a passionate, loving, strong and beautiful woman. She taught us so much about life, giving, compassion, empathy and love. We feel at peace knowing she is with her Lord and that she has many family, friends and Mary Kay looking after her. Mom dedicated her life to helping others feel good about themselves and spread their wings.

She practiced the "Go-Give Spirit" in every aspect of her life. On an interesting note, Esther and her mother passed on the same day 6/20/2013, Eunice Houston 6/20/1994.

Esther's wish was that in lieu of flowers, any donations please be sent to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308-5428. (800) 772-5862. Per her wishes we are having an online Memorial and we will post it once it has been setup. Thank you all for your prayers, love and support.

John 14:1-4 "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going."

    With love,

    Notes:

    Obituary:

Our beloved mother, Fannie Carroll Youngblood sadly passed away on December 19th 2023 surrounded by her closest family in the comfort of her home. Until the end, she maintained her kindness, grace, appreciation for family and friends, and most importantly, her strong faith in God and her savior Jesus Christ. She lived a life that was full of love, success, and memorable experiences.

She was born in 1940 in the small town of Sarepta, Louisiana to her father Lee Houston and mother Nova Mitchell and was one of five sisters that included Thelma, Mary, Martha, and Virginia. It was there, as a very young girl, working on the farm that she learned valuable life lessons of respect, discipline, responsibility, and hard work. This part of her life would shape who she would become. After high school she left to pursue higher education at Northwestern State University of Louisiana in Natchitoches.

During her time in college, she enjoyed studying, fellowship with classmates, playing tennis, and also dancing on the University dance team now known as the Demon Dazzlers. During this time she pursued a degree in Education with a focus on children with special needs. One of the most memorable experiences at Northwestern would be meeting a young student named Ray Youngblood to whom she would marry in 1961.

After graduating from Northwestern State University in 1962, she became an Air Force officer's wife when her new husband became a 2nd, Lieutenant. During her years as an officer's wife, she would have two children Tanya and Russell and they would live in various cities as she continued to teach school while her husband pursued active military service in the United States Air Force.

In 1977, she and Ray became Amway Independent Business Owners, achieving the level of Diamond Direct Disributors. Through Carroll's many years of teaching and building a very successful worldwide business she touched tens of thousands of lives until the very end.

Carroll was many things to many people a friend, a mentor, a leader, and a prayer warrior. Whether she was speaking to one individual or 20 thousand people in a coliseum, you knew that she was speaking from the heart.

But the most important accomplishment of her life was her Christian Walk. Her Faith and Belief in God was solid and unyielding. Her constant desire was to please her Heavenly Father through generously and joyously giving to, loving, and serving other people.

Of all the titles Carroll had, the greatest titles in life were that of a Child of God, a wife, a mom, and Nana to her surviving four grandchildren Ethan, Bryan, Caroline, and Lauren.
