    Obituary:

Doris Sanders, of College Station, TX, passed away November 20, 2005. She was born December 9, 1917 in Grimes County.

Mrs. Sanders died Sunday at home on Carter Lake surrounded by her beloved husband, daughter and grandchildren. She was a life-long resident of Bryan and College Station and was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Doris was greatly loved by all who knew her and touched the lives of people around the world with her generosity, compassion, sense of justice and faith. She was known for her conviction in God, her keen sense of humor and endless energy for motivating people to live their life to the fullest and to love the Lord, Jesus Christ. She easily brought people into her home and into her heart. She cared for people in a way that made each person feel special, honored and valued. She cared enough to want to know the names of her nurses, EMTs and hospice staff (who took such wonderful care of her) and the names of their family members.

Doris was wholly devoted to her family and was never far from the side of her husband, Ray. Doris and Ray, wonderful as business partners and life partners, loved their farm and working cattle together. She made the farm a family gathering place where as many memories as biscuits were made. She loved to travel, read, plant trees, garden, cook, and engage her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in arts and crafts. She loved gospel music and she loved to hear her daughter sing. She loved animals, especially birds and dogs. She laughed easily, enjoyed a good story and was always ready to tell one. She inspired her grandchildren to love the natural world and to know that ever tree had a purpose. She was like an oak tree with huge expansive limbs that provided shade and protection for all of us who stood under her canopy. Those who knew her would describe her as a woman of great religious faith, intense loyalty, courage, intelligence, and fiercely protective of those she loved. Those of us who lived with her knew her as a weaver, one who wove love and compassion throughout her family tapestry.

    Our lives are richer and stronger because of this dearly loved woman...my wife...my mother...my mother-in-law...our grandmother...our great-grandmother...our aunt...our mentor...our teacher and guide...our support system...our storyteller...our advisor...our encourager...our healer...our pioneer...our dear friend...our matriarch...our heart.

Doris Sanders was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Zalenski; her parents, James E. and Lela Vincent; two brothers, James and Curtis Vincent. She is survived by her husband, J. Ray Sanders; her daughter, Dr. Ann Pye Shively and husband, Dr. Michael Shively of Springville, Utah; five grandchildren, Dori Petersen and husband, Matthew Petersen, of Nibley, Utah, Dr. Lori Pye of Channel Islands, California, Jim Pye and wife, Dawn Pye of College Station; Jeffrey Shively and wife, Lindsey Shively of Provo, Utah; Sheri Myers and husband, Jay Myers of Provo, Utah; and six great-grandchildren.

The celebration services of Doris' life are set for Friday, November 25 at 10:00 am at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Dr. Bruce Wood and Dr. Rick Rigsby will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Hillier Funeral Home, where the viewing was held on Wednesday, November 23 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Sill Creek Boys and Girls Ranch or Hospice Brazos Valley.
