1411 Obituary:

FIGHTING FIRE IS FATAL FOR AGED WOMAN

MRS. SARAH GREER, 85, LOSES HER LIFE WHEN FLAMES THREATEN HOME

Funeral Today

BODY IS SEVERELY BURNED AND CHARRED BEFORE HELP IS GIVEN

News of the tragic death of Mrs. Sarah Greer, aged 85 years who was burned to death late Tuesday afternoon at the home of her son, Avery Greer in the Peach Creek community, reached Bryan this morning. Reports of the sad accident are to the effect that Mrs. Greer, and the other members of the family, who were at home at the time, saw the high, dry grass in the pasture near the house burning, and as the fire increased and was fast getting nearer the house, went out to fight against it. While trying to put out the grass fire, Mrs. Greer's clothing caught fire, and were burned off her, her body also becoming deeply burned and charred. So seriously was the aged woman injured, that she died before a doctor could reach the home.

Deceased has been a resident of Brazos county for more than sixty years, having lived in Bryan with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin, before the days of the Civil War. Only two sisters and one brother of the once large family survive: Mrs. Tom Caywood, and Mrs. Jane Collard of Bryan and Monroe Martin of Batesville, Texas. Three sons also survive the aged mother: Avery Greer, with whom she made her home, George Greer, and Bud Greer, all of Brazos county.

The body was prepared for burial, and the funeral conducted under the direction of McCulloch-Dansby, funeral directors of Bryan, with interment made at the old Sims cemetery near Millican in the southern part of Brazos county. The hour of the funeral was ten o'clock Wednesday, August 16, and many old time friends and neighbors, who knew and loved the deceased were present to pay the last sad tribute of respect to her memory.

To the bereaved family, and other relatives, sincere and heartfelt sympathy is extended in this sad hour of sorrow, because of the tragic death of mother, and grandmother, whose long life has been such a benediction to them, and whose sudden death brings them such untold grief.

Florine Hamlin Vessel

Florine Hamlin Vessel, beloved mother of Martha "Marty" Banner, left this earth on Saturday morning, June 6, 2009 with her daughter at her side. To those lucky enough to meet her, she always had a smile on her face and humor in her heart.

Florine Hamlin was born July 15, 1919 in Dawson County, Texas to Robert David Hamlin and Martha Eddy Hamlin. She was the fifth of seven children. The family moved to Midland in 1924. Florine was a graduated of Midland High School. After attending Ross Secretarial School, she worked for George Abell for ten years and Glass and Myrick Insurance for twenty years. In 1952, she married Bill "W.O." Vessel. He preceded her in death in March, 1987. She enjoyed a Christian life and lived faithfully as a true and dedicated Christian. Florine loved her many nieces and nephews and enjoyed making salt water taffy, divinity and other sweets to share with them. She loved her garden and canning black-eyed peas which were the mainstay of her family traditions. Florine loved to entertain her relatives who came to visit often. She liked to ride the many horses her husband and daughter traded for so often and thought they were terrible to keep trading the horses she had grown attached to. Later in life, Florine enjoyed fishing, cooking, and going to their lake house at Colorado City Lake. She had a fondness for Parakeets and Siamese Cats. Florine collected miniature cats, which were allover her home.

Florine was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, H. "Bud", John, R.D., Clyde and Harry; and sisters, Lily and Marie.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Martha Banner and husband Greg; three grandchildren, Brian Walker, Chassi Hardin and husband Kevin, Covan Banner; five great-grandchildren, Leandra Gilmore, Mariah Gilmore, Dylan Gilmore, Keyli and Brandon Ho; sister-in-law, Chris Hamlin and her children, Susan , Tony Hamlin and his wife Becky; nieces, Ialee Turner and husband Walter and their children, Clay, Kaylynn and Suzanne and her daughters, Cody and Mandy all of Midland, Nancy and Robert Taylor and their daughter ,Christy and many other loving relatives.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Midland and Trinity Haven for their support and care. They are thankful for the many friends from Westside Church of Christ who loved her and ministered to her, who were saddened at her passing but rejoice for her new life in heaven. Praise the Lord!

The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.

The printed poem, "Your Face Speaks" was written by Mark Mercer who dedicated it to Florine for her spirit and kindheartedness in thinking of helping others after Bill died. She lived a life that anyone would be proud of and that her family looked up to.

You don't have to tell
How you live each day
You don't have to say
If you work or you play
A tried true barometer
Serves in its place
However you live it
Will show in your face.
The false, the deceit
That you bear in your heart
Will not stay inside
Where it first got its start
For sinew and blood
Are a thin veil of lace
What you bear in your heart
You wear in your face.
If you life is unselfish
If for others you live
For not what you get
But how much you can give
If you live close to God
In His infinite grace
You don't have to show it,
It shows in your face.

Thank you for being there for us so many times. What would our family be without you and all of the West Kentucky members that have shown what being a Christian is all about. Thank you to West Side Church of Christ members where Florine worshipped and loved so many of her brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank you to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church members, St. Paul's Angelican Church, and First Baptist Church for keeping the faith with our family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
