| 1933 | Obituary: James Floyd Hoffpauir January 11, 1929 - March 9, 2025 James Floyd Hoffpauir, 96, of Winnie, passed away peacefully on the evening of Sunday, March 9, 2025. He was born on January 11, 1929 in Terry, Texas to Douglas Hoffpauir and Zula Clement Hoffpauir. He was known to many by many different names. To those closest, he was called Dad, Honey, Pop and Pawpaw. To many others, he was called James or Floyd. He grew up in the Nome and Fannett areas and finally landed in Winnie. He was attending East Chambers High School and dropped out of school during his 10th grade year. His strong work ethic led him to go back to East Chambers High School and attend GED classes and get his diploma while he was in his sixties. At the age of 17 he joined the Army and proudly served as a Military Police in Japan immediately following WWII. After returning from the war and living in Winnie he met Sarah Lea Hamous. They were married September 15, 1951 and began their family of four boys in 1953. He and Sarah were dedicated to serving Christ and became members of First Baptist Church Stowell during the early 1950s. They and the four boys were at the church whenever the doors were open. It was also during this time that Sarah's endearing phrase of "Honey" became so well known that even the male church members began to refer to him as Honey. He remained a faithful member after Sarah's death in 2005 and continued being active and attending church until some time in 2023 when mobility issues kept him home. After learning of her cancer diagnosis in 2004, Sarah insisted that Honey learn how to handle their household finances and learn how to cook for himself. This led to a passion as well as talent for cooking. He was expected to bring his corn casserole and bake something sweet for all church functions and family holiday events or gatherings. He served as a member of the Pipefitter Local for 75 years. He was a proud member of the Winnie area, attending all Texas Rice Festival Events as well as many Winnie Area Chamber of Commerce events. He was an active member of the Winnie-Stowell Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years, which included years of parking cars at East Chambers Football games. He was a person many could go to as a handyman to fix things, especially at the church. He was still doing welding jobs for himself and others at the age of 85 He had a passion for gardening and won multiple awards at annual garden shows at Central Mall. At the age of 89 years old he bought a brand new Kubota Tractor to use for working around his property and to help others with landwork. A devout Christian with an incredible work ethic, we will always miss those holiday gatherings around the dinner table where we joked around and picked on each other, and had him laughing until he was crying. He is survived by: sons, James Hoffpauir and wife Lynn, Gary Hoffpauir and wife Lynda, and Randy Hoffpauir; daughter-in-love Annie Finn; grandchildren, Ken Hoffpauir and wife Shelley, Rama Bryceson and husband Josh, Royce Spencer and wife Kacie, Cole Hoffpauir and wife Kayla, Jessica Finn and husband Kaleb; great-grandchildren, Remy Hoffpauir, Otto and Sadie Bryceson, Kullen and Carter Spencer, Vayden Hoffpauir, Stevie Gray, Ivan and Korben Finn; brother L.D. | 1936 | Obituary: James Gandy May 10, 1920 - March 6, 2013 Graveside services with Masonic Rites for Dr. James Gandy, age 92, of Brownwood, will be held at 2 PM, Friday, March 8, 2013 at Gandy Cemetery near Thrifty. Burial will follow under the direction of Netherton Funeral Home & Cremations. A procession will leave from the funeral home at 1:15. Dr. Gandy passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. James D. Gandy, DVM and naturally called "Doc", was born on May 10, 1920 at Cameron, Texas. He is the son of James and Zeta Nelson Gandy. Doc graduated from Milano High School in May, 1938 and spent 1939 and 1940 in the CCC. He then entered Texas A&M College for about a year before volunteering in the Army Air Corps Flying Cadet program. Upon entering active duty in November, 1941 at Ellington Field, Texas, he began his Air Corps career. Because of his language abilities, he was sent for one year to Michigan College for language training. Upon completion of this training, he was fluent in Spanish, Italian and English. In May, 1943, Doc shipped out for New Guinea in the South Pacific to serve as a photographer and gunner in photo reconnaissance. After 10 missions in B-24s he transferred to the 372nd Bomber Squadron, also flying in B-24s. Operating out of Holandia, New Guinea, he flew as a photographer and gunner on long over-water missions. His unit supported the Australian invasion of Borneo and also went on bombing raids in the Philippines. They hit convoys, land facilities and targets of opportunity. During the war, Doc flew a total of 26 missions. Doc considered himself to be very lucky in regard to the war. On one mission, he was sitting on a stack of leaflets to be dropped on the Japanese. Anti-aircraft shrapnel penetrated the B-24 and nearly all of the stack, stopping just short of Doc's spine and posterior. While stationed at Holandia, Doc traded with the friendly natives and acquired a small outrigger canoe. On one sailing trip, the wind blew him into an area occupied by the enemy. Luckily, friendly natives reached him before the Japs did and took him safely home. He did not get to carry out his vow never to be captured even though he had his trusty .45 pistol with him. After the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, Doc came home on Operation Sunset. This was a mission to return B-24s to the U.S. One third of the planes and most of the crew members did not make it on the long flight back. Again, Doc was lucky. There were 13 crew members on each plane. Doc was discharged on December 8, 1945 at Randolph Field, Texas after 4 ½ years of service with the rank of S Sgt. For his service, he was awarded the following: American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Starts, Philippine Liberation Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Air Medal with one Bronze Cluster and two Overseas Bars. After discharge, Doc re-entered Texas A&M and graduated in 1951 as a DVM (Vet). He practiced in Killeen for 10 years and then in Brownwood until he retired from private practice in 1995.
