2418 Obituary:

Lisa Hermes
April 16, 1955 - February 29, 2024

Lisa Martin Hermes (nee Lisa Ann Martin), aged 68, passed away in her Irondale, Alabama home on February 29, 2024. She is survived by her husband, Terry Hermes, her son Clinton Hermes and wife JJ, her daughter Leah McNac and husband Chris, and her brother Harold Martin and wife Valerie.

Lisa was born on April 16, 1955, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She attended East Wauwatosa High School and graduated in 1972. She then attended the University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin, and because of her exceptional intelligence and work ethic, graduated in only two years, in 1974, with a major in Philosophy. She was accepted as a Fellow into the graduate school Philosophy program at Marquette University. She graduated with a Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1983.

She met her future husband Terry in her first year of grad school, and they were married in 1976. Her commitment to nurturing children with a strong emphasis on intellectual development paid off very well. Both children were outstanding students and now have successful careers.

Among her occupations during her working life, she had two favorites. One was the supervisor of the suicide hotline at the Birmingham Crisis Center during the 1990's and early 2000's. She recruited and trained phone counselors and fielded many suicide crisis phone calls herself. There is no way to measure how many lives she had a hand in saving, but it must have been quite a number.

Perhaps her favorite job was teaching philosophy courses at the college level. She taught one year at Miles College in Birmingham, and then for several years in the late 2000's and early 2010's as an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. By all accounts, she was a popular teacher, much-loved by her students.

Throughout her life, she was an ardent advocate for solid ethical standards in both public and private life, and always loved a good debate. She was an avid reader of fiction, especially mysteries and complex psychological plots.

She was also an avid follower of sports. Growing up in Milwaukee, she was of course raised as a Packer fan, and a fan of the Braves, who resided in Milwaukee when she was first introduced to sports in her childhood. When the Braves had the audacity to move to Atlanta, she disowned them, and remained steadfastly opposed to the Braves for the rest of her life. It was always a source of merriment to the rest of the family.

As a fitting memorial to Lisa, we encourage those who are willing and able, to contribute to the Birmingham Crisis Center. Here is the appropriate link: https:/www.crisiscenterbham.org/donate

Lloyd K. Leslie
December 12, 1925 - March 20, 2014

Lloyd Kenneth Leslie passed from this life after a lengthy illness on Thursday, March 20, 2014 while residing at a local care center. He was blessed to have his wife and several family members at his side. Services are scheduled at the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel for Sunday, March 23, 2014 at 3:00 PM. Interment will be in the Blanket Cemetery. The family will be available prior to the service for visitation from 2:00 until 3:00.

Lloyd was born on December 12, 1925 in Stonewall, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma to Robert E. and Veda Davidson Leslie. His mother would die of pneumonia when he was 18 months old and he and his older sister, Beatrice, would be raised by their father until Lloyd's age 14 when his father would remarry. Lloyd would join and work with the CC Camps until he was old enough to enter the Navy where he spent over two years during WWII.

Upon his Honorable Discharge from the Navy he would return to his native Oklahoma and reunite with his childhood sweetheart, Zelma Crow. They would marry in 1946; have their first son, Wendyl in 1947 and their second son, Jerry, in 1948. Lloyd would support his family as a very hard-working, street-smart, industrious and staunchly independent husband and father. He had a talent for turning his hand to many crafts and trades early in his life and was soon recognized by business owners as a trustworthy and dependable manager.

He would establish a retail milk and dairy delivery business in Ada, Oklahoma, which would grow and become a profitable enterprise employing several men. He would spend about 20 years building this and two other milk and dairy delivery businesses in Duncan and McAlester, Oklahoma.

Retiring from this industry he and Zelma would purchase and operate a very successful Sonic Drive-In in Garland, Texas for several years. From the proceeds of this business success they would move to Wilson, Oklahoma, buy a 40-acre plot of rich ground, build a new home and raise cattle and pigs for several years. They would then retire to Ardmore, Oklahoma for a period of time. July 21, 1911 - July 7, 2006

Lockie Lamberth passed from this life to claim her heavenly reward from our gracious Lord and Savior on Friday, July 07, 2006.

She was born on July 21, 1911 in North Zulch, Texas to Robert Henry Harris and Ona Eleanor Harris. Lockie attended North Texas State University, and received her Bachelor's Degree with a major in business administration and minor in English. On August 30, 1946, Lockie married Wilbur Paul Lamberth at Travis Park Methodist Church in San Antonio. She taught school in the Texas towns of Emhouse, Joinerville, and San Antonio. She was a teacher at Fox Tech High School from 1956-1971. Lockie retired from Fox Tech in May of 1971. She enjoyed talking about her teaching experiences. During her teaching career, she had a farm for about seven years in Marion, Texas that she liked to go to for a nice retreat. After her retirement, she spent some of her time being a blue bird at the Methodist Hospital. Being a good cook, she liked preparing meals for relatives on special occasions. She enjoyed painting, and particularly noteworthy was her work with landscapes. During her retirement, one of the ways she enhanced her well being was by going to her one-acre peaceful setting in Castroville. It was a very nice place that provided refreshing of the mind for her and her relatives. Lockie owned the area for about six years. Foremost in Lockie's life was offering her assistance to her family and society. She was a contributor to many worthwhile organizations including her church, Travis Park Methodist, the March of Dimes, the Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner, and the San Antonio Food Bank. She liked to give to charities associated with children's needs like the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and Teach the Children. Her giving and caring nature truly defined a person of great love and enormous worth. Lockie was a beautiful inspiration whose unselfish acts for others brought her a big dividend of personal happiness.

2438 Obituary:

Loreta "Reta" Crenshaw (Griffith)
Sunday, August 26th, 1928 - Monday, February 24th, 2020

As we commemorate Loreta Lavee Crenshaw "Reta" and celebrate her life, we remember all the hard work she put in to life. No matter the obstacles, she always worked to keep her marriage of 60 years a priority, she worked to keep her faith in God a priority and she worked hard to keep her family happy and healthy.

Loreta Lavee Griffith was born on August 26, 1928, in De Leon, Texas to David Litton Griffith and Sallie Veta Morgan Griffith. She was raised in and attended schools in Desdemona, Texas. She played basketball for Desdemona High School and graduated in 1945 at 17 years of age.

The summer after graduation, she was swept off her feet by a handsome young man, James Eugene Crenshaw "Gene", who had just been honorably discharged from the Navy after serving his country in WWII. They were married soon after her 18th birthday on August 30th, 1946. When asked what attracted her to him, her eyes lit up as she said it was his blonde wavy hair, his beautiful white teeth, an impish smile, his wonderful hug and the sense of excitement and adventure he projected when he was with her. They worked together on a farm, traded cattle, and started their family when their son, James, was born on October 15, 1947.

During the Korean conflict, Gene reenlisted in the Navy and their small family of 3 moved to San Diego, California, where they lived until May, 1952. While there, Reta worked on the Naval Base as a riveter.

After her husband's discharge from the Navy, Reta and her family moved to a farm outside of Desdemona, Texas, where their daughter, Sheila, was born on May 22, 1953. After a devastating fire that destroyed their home and crops in 1955, Reta and Gene moved to the oilfields of West Texas, eventually settling in the small community of Jal, New Mexico.

While in Jal, Reta was a homemaker until her youngest child started school. At that point, she started seeking employment outside of the home and began her impressive banking career with New Mexico Bank and Trust Company in 1961. Over the years, she gained extensive knowledge and experience in many phases of the bank's operations and was promoted to many leadership positions there. In 1977 she was promoted to Operations Officer for the branch. In 1979, she received another promotion to Assistant Vice President, Loans.

Reta and her husband both loved the outdoors and loved spending time with their friends. Most weekends while in Jal were spent taking trips or vacations to cabins in Colorado to fish, land leases along the Rio Grande River for camping and fishing, deer hunting, bird hunting and weekend trips to Mexico. In addition, Reta served as Noble Grand of the IOOF of the Jal Rebekah Lodge and enjoyed playing golf.

After their retirement in 1984, Reta and Gene moved to Alba, Texas where they attended and were active in the Church of Christ there. She enjoyed running the household, canning the vegetables they grew in their garden, helping with the cattle, playing games on the computer, volunteering as a member of the Newcomers Club and looking after the couple's finances. After her husband's death in 2007, Reta moved to Plano, Texas where she lived with her daughter, Sheila, until the end of her life on February 24, 2020.

Reta is survived by her daughter, Sheila Frank of Plano; 4 grandchildren, Laura Frank, Ben Crenshaw, Paul Crenshaw, and Darryl Crenshaw; 7 great grandchildren, Zach, Sadie, Audrey and Rowdy Crenshaw, Lilyana and Jack Kemper, and Vajray Crenshaw; and 1 great great grandchild, Amelia Crenshaw.

Loretta Dubois Is Killed In Accident

Miss Loretta Jane Dubois, native of Kaplan and member of a widely known family here, but a resident of the New Orleans area for the past 11 years, died in a New Orleans hospital at 4:30 p.m. Thursday from injuries received in a three-car collision on the West Bank Expressway at Lafayette street, the accident occurring about two hours prior to her death.

Miss Dubois, 20 years of age, was a beautician in her mother's ship in Gretna, and was returning from a hospital where she had gone to assist a friend. According to accounts, she had stopped at the traffic light on the four-lane highway, and another car along side her pulled out as she did when the light changed. Driver of the third car, approaching on Lafayette street, apparently tried to cross as the light was changing and hit Miss Dubois' car broadside. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and passed away on a few hours later.

The remains were returned to Kaplan and held in state at the Meaux Funeral Home until 11 o'clock Saturday morning, when funeral services were held from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Maurice Dussault officiating. Interment followed in the Kaplan Mausoleum in the local Catholic Cemetery, Meaux's Funeral Home directing the arrangements.

On Friday night the Rosary was recited several times at the Funeral Home, one Rosary being led by Father Dussault, while a second included a group of her cousins and young friends of this community, all about her age.

Pallbearers for the final rites included Miss Dubois' uncles, J. C. Bourque, of Kenner, Loston Bourque, Ivan Bourque and Ellis Bourque, all of Kaplan, Ludness Henry of Berwick, Dalton Suire of Abbeville, Ernest Sonnier of Lake Charles and Ophie Mire of Creole.

Born in Kaplan, Miss Dubois moved to the New Orleans area with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Previs Dubois about eleven years ago, and the family was presently making their home in Gretna. She graduated from the West Jefferson High School and later attended a New Orleans Beauty College. After completing her studies, she entered Flo's Beauty Shop with her mother, where she had since been employed.

In addition to the bereaved parents, she is survived by two sisters, Jeanette Ann and Deanna Dubois, both of Gretna, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Enus Dubois and Mr. and Mrs. U. Bourque, all of Kaplan. In addition, a number of aunts and uncles, many of whom are from the Kaplan area, survive her, as well as other relatives in this section.

Her untimely death came as a great shock to family and friends alike, and the Funeral Home and Holy Rosary Catholic Church were visited by throngs of relatives and close friends throughout the time the body lay in state here, and during the last services.
