1805 Obituary:

Melvin Ernest Pertl passed away peacefully, at home with family on February 7, 2022, at the age of 93, ending a long battle with bladder cancer. With a renewed body, his spirit is rejoicing in heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Melvin was born on June 2, 1928, to Stanley and Annie (Sebesta) Pertl. He grew up in a Czech family with five siblings, Clarence, Stanley, Naomi, Joel and Joyce farming in San Antonio Prairie, TX. He attended the Red Hollow School and then Caldwell High until 1944. In his youth, Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and cousins.

On November 29, 1950, Melvin was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Morganfield, Kentucky as a Medic (Orthopedic Technician). On August 29, 1953, he married Dorothy Faye Baxter, with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage. Together they raised three children, Brad, Larry, and Trina, and resided in Houston, TX for thirty years. In 1984, after retiring from Mobil, Melvin and Dorothy moved to Deanville, TX, where they have resided for the past 38 years. Together they farmed and raised cattle. 1809 Obituary:

Memorial services for Mrs. Sylvia Newsom McKinney, age 61, were held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, August 6, 2017, at the Plain Dealing Baptist Church in Plain Dealing, LA with Rev. Scott Teutsch and Rev. Marty Wright officiating. Services were under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Plain Dealing. Visitation was held Sunday, August 6, 2017, from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Plain Dealing Baptist Church.

On August 3, 2017, after complications from surgery, Sylvia went to be with her Heavenly Father. The earthly limitations placed on her body have been lifted and she is free! Praise God!

Sylvia was born February 11, 1956 to Jeane and Harold Newsom of Sarepta, Louisiana. She was one of five children; she had two brothers and two sisters. She loved being a part of a large family and was very proud of her small-town upbringing. A self proclaimed "daddy's girl", one of her favorite childhood memories was singing alongside her father in church.

Sylvia graduated from high school in Sarepta during the time her father was principal there. She went to Northwestern State University where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education/Teaching. Later on she went to Centenary College where she procured a Master's degree in Education/Administration and Supervision. Her formal education ended there, however she was an avid reader and a proponent of lifelong learning.

Sylvia was a teacher and then an administrator in the public school system for over 30 years. Teaching was her calling, her passion and her God-given gift. She inspired and impacted countless lives throughout her career. It was not unusual for past students to contact her years after being in her classroom to share their accomplishments and thank her for her influence.

She retired in 2011 and built her dream home in 2012, complete with a library and plenty of room for all the grandchildren.
As a new teacher she worked during the summer as a salesperson at a local department store. It was there that she helped a struggling young dad find a swimsuit for his five year old daughter. Little did she know, she would become that man's wife and that little girl's mother.

Sylvia was a loving and devoted wife to George for almost 36 years. Through her Christian influence, she led him to know Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Over the years she continued to support and encourage his spiritual growth. She was his light in the dark times and his companion in the illuminated ones. His loss is palpable.

Sylvia had many gifts- singing, cooking, being tech savvy- but being a wife, mother and grandmother is where she shined the brightest. Her family was the joy of her soul. She knew the value of quality time and was eager to spend it with loved ones. Arts and crafts, board games, cooking lessons- it was always a good time at Grandma's house. The bigger the mess or chaos, the sweeter the memory!

Sylvia was a progressive thinker with a unique perspective. Her view and input will be missed. She was a leader, an encourager, a positive influence and a force to be reckoned with. She was generous and kind. And salty when she needed to be. We are thankful that, for a time, she was ours.

She is survived by her husband George Lyman McKinney; daughter, Claudia McKinney Martin and her husband, Ty; two sons, Aaron Drew McKinney, Christopher Nolan McKinney and his wife, Heidi; eleven grandchildren, Hazel McKinney, Lydia McKinney, Ramona McKinney, Julian Faust McKinney, Eli McKinney, Louis McKinney, Cassie Bailey, Cozy Graham, Jaxon Graham, Jaycie Martin, Sophie Martin; sister, Susan Newsom Janik and husband, Mark of Houston, TX; two brothers, Stanley Newsom and wife, Jane of Sarepta, LA, Stephen Newsom and wife, Deborah of Deridder, LA; niece, Andrea Williams; and nine nephews, Jared Newsom, Lance Newsom, Chad Newsom, Brent Newsom, Mark Newsom, Tate Janik, Jared Janik, Vance Janik and Royce David Janik.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sherry Delores Newsom. Serving as honorary pallbearers were her nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Diabetes Association.

1817 Obituary:

Michael Edwin Tucker of Longview passed away on January 23, 2018, at the age of 62 after a battle with cancer. He was born May 25, 1955, in El Paso, Texas, to William Marshall and Nellie (Nancy) Tucker. He is survived by his wife, Gretchen Tucker, and son, Christopher Tucker, both of Longview; parents, William and Nancy, of San Antonio; brother, Dave, of Memphis, TN; sister, Pam, of San Antonio; and brother, Garry, of San Antonio;

Michael grew up in an Air Force family and lived in El Paso; Albany, Georgia; Rantoul, Illinois; and San Antonio, where he graduated from Judson High School. He attended Texas A&M, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets, appointed as Commanding Officer of Company N-1, and elected as a member of the prestigious Ross Volunteers. As a member of the A&M Class of '77, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology with a focus on civil construction.
After graduation, Michael received a commission in the United States Marine Corps. His service was highlighted by high marks and letters of commendation from the Marine Corps.

After fulfilling his duty in 1981, Michael moved to Longview, Texas, to begin a career in the private sector. In 1982 he founded Transet Company along with partner Mike Smith. What started as a modest two-man operation grew to become the largest general contracting / construction management firm in Northeast Texas. Michael's professional success can be attributed to his drive, discipline, consistency, intellect, humility, and loyalty to his company, employees, and clients. The impact he made on the community through his work is immeasurable - the quantifiable millions of square feet of construction will only be part of his legacy.

Michael participated generously in many philanthropic efforts, particularly those related to LeTourneau University, for which he was a longtime contributor toward student scholarships and sponsorship of Belcher Center performances.

In his personal time, for many years, he enjoyed boating on his custom 40' cigarette boat, "Radical Ride", and in recent years enjoyed the slower pace of his pontoon boat and kayaks. A natural athlete, he was a gifted golfer and basketball player.

In recent years, he and Gretchen enjoyed spending time at their vacation home in Southwest Florida with family and friends.

Above all, Michael was most proud of his relationships with family and with those who knew they could count on him. One of his proudest accomplishments was being able to continue his legacy at Transet Company with Christopher.

The family wishes to thank the physicians and staff of Texas Oncology in Longview. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to LeTourneau University.

Michael will be remembered and dearly missed as a father, son, husband, brother, and friend.
There will be a memorial service held on Friday, February 2, at 3:00pm, at the Foyer of the Belcher Center.

Michelle Hamlin Grumbles, age 51, unexpectedly passed away at home in Stephenville, TX on November 27, 2019. Michelle was born on March 15, 1968 in Amarillo, TX.

Marrying her one true love, her life as a married woman took her on a great adventure of knowing little about country life to running the business end of a ranch. She was known to many as a tough woman who didn't back away from any challenge, but with the same hands gently nursed many friends and family members. As her family grew, she took the title of motherhood with great pride. She did all for her family. From Boy Scouts, to sports, endless amounts of homework, teaching basic life skills and all the challenges in raising fine, young men. As they grew, spending time with her dogs and traveling on the Harley with her husband brought her great joy. Just this summer, they checked off a bucket list item in traveling to South Dakota for the Sturgis Bike Rally. Moving into a dream home added another check to the bucket list and entertaining at an enormous dining table was a dream come true. She cherished the annual pilgrimage to the Camp Ben McCulloch to visit friends and family. In fact, she took a lot of time out of her days to speak with her families and friends. In every way, with everything she did, it was all and always for her families, near and far. With all the lives she touched, she left everlasting memories.

Proceeding her in death are her mother, Betty Maxfield; a brother, Terry Hopkins; an infant daughter, Misty Joy Grumbles; and father-in-law, Buddy Grumbles. Michelle is survived by her husband of 30 yrs., Richard Grumbles and their two sons, William Grumbles, and Justin Grumbles. Michelle was especially fond of her graduating class of 1986 at Arkansas High in Texarkana, TX.

1825 Obituary:

MIDLAND - Ialee Kay ("Sammye") Turner passed away peacefully at age 86 on October 12, 2016.

Ialee Kay McGee was born June 22, 1930 to Poley P. McGee and Lily McGee in Midland. She spent her youth in Colorado City wrangling two dear brothers, Lane and Larry McGee, and attended Colorado High School (where we understand the pep squad was outstanding...from her own accounts!).

It was there that she met the love of her life, Walter L. Turner. After Walter convinced Mr. and Mrs. McGee that he was a worthy man to take care of their daughter, the elder McGees approved, and Walter and "Sammye" (a nickname she acquired in high school) were married on June 26, 1947.

They soon began the adventure of their new lives together in Midland, which they called home for the rest of their lives. After a honeymoon phase of a few years, the adventure expanded with the addition of their three children: daughter Kaylynn, daughter Suzanne and son Clay.

In their first years in Midland, Sammye worked in a photography studio and discovered a lifelong love of photography. Her favorite subjects to photograph were her children and grandchildren, historic Texas courthouses and Texas wildflowers from all over the state. A spring "flower tour" of much of the state they loved, was an annual ritual for Walter and Sammye during each April when the wildflowers were at their peak.

The family ultimately expanded to grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Although most made their homes in Midland, some are spread as far afield as Austin and New Orleans.

Sammye and Walter's adventure together ended after 63 years of marriage with Walter's death in 2010. Sammye continued on her path alone but surrounded by loving children and grandchildren until her death on October 12, 2016. She was loved and will be very much missed by all including her grandchildren Cody Peck, Mandy Hendrix and Chris Turner-Neal.

A private burial will be held in Colorado City. In lieu of flowers. The family requests donations be made to Home Hospice of Midland.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory. Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com.

After his return to Colorado City, at the end of his service, he courted Ialee "Sammye" McGee. They married on June 6, 1947. During 63 years of marriage, they had three children, who would give them three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Always known for his integrity and the quality of his work, Walter worked as a building contractor, a trade he took pride in and enjoyed for 50 years.

1828 Obituary:

Mike was born in Mount Summit, Indiana to Phyllis Beavers Shively and Alan Shively. He returned to his heavenly home in Provo, Utah on August 19, 2019, with his family at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Ann; five children, Jeff Shively (Linsey), Sheri Meyers (Jay), Dori Pye, Lori Pye (Jacqui), and Jim Pye;12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a brother, Jeff Alexander, and a niece and nephew.

Mike earned his DVM, M.S, and Ph.D. from Purdue University. He taught both veterinary and human anatomy and physiology before coming to Utah Valley University, where he has taught anatomy and physiology for the past 27 years. He was a prolific author in peer reviewed scientific journals as well as a solicited reviewer with four more publications currently in preparation. He was past president of the UVU Faculty Senate, former Department Chair in the Department of Life Sciences, and Faculty Athletic Representative. He was appointed the Human Anatomy Program Coordinator in 1993, redesigning the curriculum and building a program that has earned statewide and national recognition.

Mike served the UVU community in various ways through support of the Wolverines in not only attending various athletic events, but also playing his trumpet at games. He enthusiastically kept UVU in both the state and national arenas through presentations at scientific meetings, being a grant recipient multiple times, and serving on university, national, and international committees. He served on the search committees for a past UVU president and new faculty members. He was the recipient of multiple citations, awards, and honors during his tenure at UVU, including nine teaching awards and five-time Teacher of the Year.

Mike wrote poetry, songs, and possessed a great love for music. He was an accomplished musician on both trumpet and guitar; he was always honored to play his trumpet for Wolverine games, and his guitar when students requested it. He played with the American Fork Symphony and Sarge's All Star Band. He wrote love songs for his dear wife, Annie, poetry and journals for his children, and humorous verses (containing anatomical terms and anatomy lab jargon) for his many students over the years that he set to common tunes which occasionally resulted in rather ribald humor.

He was also a marathon canoe racer and five-time champion and former record holder in various classes of the Tx Water Safari. He taught all of his children to paddle and they all retain a love of nature, exploration, and stewardship of the earth along with a healthy competitive spirit when in a boat.

Mike was a husband and father most of all, but also a good friend, neighbor, and incredible human being. He was a builder of decks and of critical thought. Because of the thousands of students he taught, who in turn will serve thousands of others, Mike's legacy will continue to touch lives for good.

1831 Obituary:

Mildred Drgac Crnkovic, 89, of Cook's Point, was called home on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009.

Funeral services are set for 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at the New Tabor Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at the Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Mrs. Crnkovic was born on April 11, 1919, in Cooks Point community, the daughter of John K. and Stanislava Skrivanek Drgac and was baptized at the Cooks Point Brethren Church. She graduated from Sam Houston State University and spent the next 40 years as an elementary teacher in the Freeport, Mobile, Bryan, Cooks Point and Snook schools.

Mildred was teaching in Freeport in the early 1940's and during the summers she worked on the USO staff where she met and married William "Bill" Crnkovic. They were married on July 22, 1944, at St John's Catholic Church in Gulfport, Mississippi.

After the war, they moved back to Cooks Point and raised their family of three boys: William Jr., John, and Joe.

Along with her husband, they owned Beltone Hearing Aid Service in Bryan for over 30 years. Mildred would teach school during the day and helped with the business in the afternoons and on weekends.

She eventually retired from teaching school but still went to the office everyday up to the time health problems prevented it.

Her son, Joe, still operates the business. Even so, family was most important. She still found the time to keep a house and cook meals. Thus, very few meals were eaten out.

Every Sunday all year she got up at 5 a.m. to cook a full meal for lunch and dinner. Family and friends would begin to stop by mid-morning for her chicken drumsticks. The main meal would be ready for all her family at noon. Broccoli and rice casserole, spaghetti, and her sweet tea were family favorites.

She could be found playing 42 as a pastime. Gardening was another of her favorites. From the vegetable garden out back to that African violet she somehow grew on an end table (out of the sunlight) in the den, plants loved her green thumb.

All of this and more made her a wonderful mother and will be missed. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks for all the prayers, warm wishes, food, and memorials.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, John K. and Stanislava Drgac; husband, William "Bill" Crnkovic; sisters, Stanislava Drgac, Annie Laurie Drgac and Lydia Drgac; and her brother, Alvin Drgac.

Survivors include her three sons and two daughters-in-law, William Jr. and Janet Crnkovic of Cook's Point, Joe and Lillian Crnkovic of Cook's Point and John Crnkovic of Austin; six grandchildren, Chris Crnkovic, Brandi Crnkovic, Nicole Crnkovic, Kimberly Crnkovic, Joseph Crnkovic, and Tanya Reyna; and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers will be Chris Crnkovic, Joseph Crnkovic Jr., Mark Evans, Kevin Faust, Sam Polasek, and Chad Robinson. Honorary pallbearer will be her nephew Douglas Drgac.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cooks Point Brethren Church.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Strickland Funeral Home, 530 Hwy 36 South, Caldwell, TX.
