1601 Obituary:

Hazel Elizabeth Hoffman Simon

In loving memory of Hazel Elizabeth Hoffman Simon

My task here is complete; my Lord has called me home. I will always be near - in your hearts and memory.

Don't allow my passing to sadden your hearts. I am now with all my family and friends that have gone before me, and I will always be with you. I am at such peace that words can't describe.

CROWLEY - "Betty" was born June 7, 1926, in Crowley, and resided there with her family all her life. She served the people of Acadia Parish working in the Tax Assessor's Office for 20-plus years. She was a graduate of St. Michael's High School.

Mrs. Simon is survived by two sons, James Simon and wife Cheryl of Lafayette, and Robert and wife Debbie of Youngsville; daughter-in-law, Patty Simon of Crowley; grandmother to Rohn K. Simon and wife Kelly Clark Simon of Mandeville, Mamie E. Romero and husband Paul Romero of Youngsville, Oren P. Simon III and wife Christi of Cypress, Texas, Ryan P. Simon and wife Marisa Keefe Simon of Denver, Colorado, Shelley R. Roger and husband Corey Roger of New Orleans, Jacob M. Simon of New Orleans, Shai E. Simon of Youngsville, Brad Broussard and wife Beth Broussard of Youngsville; and great-grandmother to Tyler and Brandon Romero, Kameron and Grant Broussard, Aiden and Allie Simon, Cole Michael and Averi Kate Simon, Emery, Riley, Peyton and Oliver Simon; one brother, Henry Hoffman of Houston, Texas; and one sister, Myrtle Tager of Chula Vista, California.
Most of all, she was the very essence of love to all and the matriarch of our family. To say that she will be missed cannot describe our loss, but she made sure, through her photo albums, that we will always remember who she was and how deeply she loved each of us.

God shared his love with us through Grandma. We will never forget her quick wit, infectious smile, and profound sense of compassion for all, nor will we forget her need to give nicknames to all of us or the neighbor's pets. She was many things, but most of all, to us, she was Grandma.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Oren P. Simon Sr.; her parents Justice James and Norma Landry Hoffman; son, Oren P. Simon Jr.; one sister, Gene Hoffman Carter; one brother, James Landry Hoffman; and granddaughter Robyn Simon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church.

Mrs. Simon died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018, at 1:45 p.m. surrounded by her loving family.

Fr. Steve LeBlanc, pastor of St. Basil Catholic Church, will officiate for the services.

The family requests visiting hours Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. A rosary will be recited Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rohn K. Simon, Oren P Simon III, Ryan P. Simon, Jacob M. Simon, Tyler P. Romero and Brandon J. Romero.

The entire family thanks Kathy Ashworth, Melissa Guidry, Elizabeth Benton and Charmaine and Kevin Leger for their love and devotion to our mother these last few years.

Also, a special thank you to Lamm Hospice. They helped make God's journey for her more comforting and loving. We will always be in your debt.

1616 Obituary:

Helen Elaine Warren Baker
July 17, 1925 - May 25, 2014

Helen Elaine Warren Baker, 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Midland, Texas, on May 25, 2014. Elaine was born July 17, 1925, in Houston, Texas, and grew up in College Station, where she was chosen Class Favorite her junior year at Texas A&M Consolidated High School. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston, where she played the bugle in the prestigious Scottish Brigade.

Elaine was born into a remarkable family. Her mother, Inez German Warren, (our "Nana"), was orphaned at an early age, lost her husband during the Great Depression when Elaine turned 13, and took on the roles of father, mother, and breadwinner. Inez reared Elaine and her two brothers without help, and even sent her two sons to college. Elaine's brothers, David Russell "Jack" Warren, and Alton Lionel "Jerry" Warren, subsequently built brilliant careers-- Jack as an engineer/inventor for Welex/Halliburton before he passed away, and Jerry, who is a geophysicist in Houston. Elaine made excellent grades in school, but always was in trouble for talking in class.

In January 1944, Elaine boarded a train to St. Louis, Missouri to wed Lillo Munger Baker. From there, Lillo was sent to Europe with the U.S. Army in World War II, and Elaine returned home to Houston. Lillo survived the Battle of the Bulge and returned to Texas. They moved to Midland in 1947, and joined the First Presbyterian Church, where she taught President George W. Bush in third-grade Sunday school. In 1968, they left Midland, and moved four times before returning 26 years later, renewing treasured, old friendships.

Elaine served as a volunteer for Midland Memorial Hospital, Midland Community Theatre, and for various organizations in Temple, Texas. She was a charter member of the Midland Symphony Guild, on the Board of Directors for the Abilene Opera Association, and a member of Midland Opera Theatre. In Abilene, she delighted in helping with costume changes and repairs backstage at the Paramount Theatre in Abilene.

Laughing was Elaine's favorite pastime. She was a wonderful, fun-loving mother who kept the family busy with songs, stories, games, contests and wacky experiments. She held turtle races in the sixties, in which snapping turtles Robert Richard, Dumb Ole' Guthrie and others competed for prizes. Once, she greeted formal dinner guests wearing a hillbilly hat and messy wig, and often danced with her chartreuse chicken puppet at parties. She would laugh and play with her children, and could outsmart them, too. On occasion, her son Greg tried to sneak out of the house, so she nailed the windows shut. Greg said he knew she had done it because of the crooked nails.

Elaine's innocent one-liners were clever, including, "I can't sleep in the car unless I'm driving." On losing loved ones, she said, "I just wish we could all die at once." Recently, she talked about beautiful "G" Street Park, near their home on Storey St., "And it had good tadpoles, too!" After an appendectomy a few years ago, she claimed, "I had everything I was born with till they took out my appendix. I was kind of sorry to lose that. I wanted to be complete." She worked hard at keeping a beautiful lawn and garden, and sewed curtains and clothes like a professional. She was happiest in the company of her family--Greg, Beth and Charlie, daughter Beverly, who preceded her in death, and the dear friends and hallmates of Manor Park, aka "Mana Parka Epsilon."

She is survived by her son, Greg Baker of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and daughter, Beth Qualia and husband Charlie of Midland, Texas. The family wishes to thank Brenda Dunn, Maria Adame, Mary Pena and Hospice of Midland for their excellent care.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable donation to Big Brothers / Big Sisters of Midland, 714 W. Louisiana Ave., Midland, Texas 79701, New Direction Ministry, (founded by True-Lite Christian Fellowship), P.O. Box 1541, Midland, Texas 79702, or to The Aphasia Center, 5214 Thomason, Midland, Texas 79703.

Private services will be held at First Presbyterian Church. In memory of Elaine's independent spirit and joyful life, family and friends will gather for a memorial dinner at Midland Country Club in the coming days.

Herman Voelker

Herman Voelker, after a long four years of struggling with liver disease, finally succumbed Dec. 28, 2006, at 8:03 p.m. He was born Aug. 20, 1964, and passed away at the age of 42.

Herman's last days were spent at Pine Ridge Extended Care Center. He was surrounded by family and friends when he took his last breath and went to be with our heavenly father.

Herman loved to fish, ride his horse "Blaze," and do things with his family. He was very friendly and always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved to joke around and was always fun to be with. His joyful eyes and wonderful smile always brightened up the room.

Herman loved his heavenly father and his heart was always turned toward God. Herman will be terribly missed by all his family and friends. But their consolation is that they will one day see him again when Jesus comes again and resurrects all those who have fallen asleep and have trusted in His promise of eternal life.
