3518 Obituary:

Robert "Bob" Donald Wilson

Seward resident Robert "Bob" Donald Wilson, 75, died July 8, 2008 at the home of his sister in Anchorage shortly after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Robert was born July 5, 1933, to the late Charles "Whitey" and Emma Wilson in Hanford, Calif. In the early 1940s, he traveled with his parents and younger brother by steamship to Seward and then north to Eklutna, where his father worked at the hydroelectric plant. The family later moved to Third Avenue in Anchorage and then to Clay Street, which is now West 25th Avenue, in Spenard. Although his youth was spent, at times, in California, Washington and Oregon, his love of the outdoors and all it had to offer came from his years at Eklutna and Spenard, where he was allowed to freely roam, explore and indulge in boyhood adventures. When he graduated from Anchorage High School in 1951, he spent a summer in Whittier working for the railroad. After deciding that Whittier was not the place for him, he attempted several ventures trying to fulfill his dreams. One of the more notable attempts landed him and his partners at Trapper's Den for a brief time in the mid-1950s. The venture proved to be a bust but the adventure was priceless. Some other places of employment were Sunshine Market, Piggly Wiggly, SandF Foodland, Market Basket, and Peterkin Distributors. While working at Piggly Wiggly, he met his first wife, Judy Finke, whom he married in 1959. The union produced two children, Roberta and Randall. Family life gave him an opportunity to share his love of the outdoors and the wilderness of Alaska with his children. When Anchorage became too populated and no longer held its appeal, he moved to the Kenai Peninsula. In the early 1970s, after years in the grocery business and after marrying his second wife, Eddie Mae, the two moved the family to Seward and put their resources together to become partners in a venture called "Bob's Market." The store site was located a few miles north of town. Although that original store building was destroyed by fire not many years after its opening, the couple's determination and resolve led them to keep and restore the business. Soon after the fire, a smaller version of Bob's Market was operating out of the Brown and Hawkins Building on Fourth Avenue in downtown Seward. A second store was eventually built at Mile 1.5 of the Seward Highway and was also operated by Bob and Eddie until its sale in the mid 1990s. The Brown and Hawkins location continued to thrive and proved successful until its closure in 2000. In retirement, Bob shared happy times with his wife enjoying their home on Bear Creek. The beauty and seclusion of their surroundings gave them many opportunities to indulge in their love of nature and animals. Family pets were always a part of their menagerie and over the years included dogs, birds, chickens, rabbits and a turtle named "Speedy." Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eddie Mae, in November 2005.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Harold Ryden; son, Randall Wilson; brother, Charles Wilson; sisters, Maxine Ford and Rose Korpi; brother-in-law, Doug Hamlin; and special friends, the Sherry Perry family and the Rick Hoogland family of Seward. Memorial donations may be made to the Seward Senior Center, P.O. Box 1195, Seward, AK 99664 or to the Pioneers of Alaska, Igloo #9, P.O. Box 571, Seward, AK 99664. Robert/Skip/Dad this loving, care-taking, handsome, hardworking husband, father, and Po, almost stubborn, hard headed man, made a point that he did not want to have a visitation, memorial, or funeral. So in respect for his wishes there will not be any of the above.

Robert (Bob) Jewell Grainger
October 8, 1927 to March 25, 2015

Bob was born in Tucson, Arizona, to John ("Jack") and Catherine Grainger.

Bob loved to play all sports, especially baseball and golf. He started playing baseball in elementary school. His freshman year in high school, he earned the award "Best All Around Boy Athlete". At age 14 he played for the Tucson American Legion. At Tucson High he played basketball, football, baseball, volleyball and tennis in spite of being a "shortie".

At the age of 27, in 1954, he started playing golf. During his golfing years he had three hole in ones!

His first wife, Helen, won the Southern Arizona Woman's Golf Association at Rio Rico Golf Course. But the Grainger family's first love was always baseball. His brother, John ("Bud"), was inducted into the Arizona Baseball Hall of Fame.

Bob also had a great love for music. He himself had a beautiful tenor voice and was an original member of the Tucson Arizona Boys' Chorus in 1939. On January 8 and 9, 2003, the Tucson Boys' Chorus performed in the PenceCenter. Bob was recognized on the evening of the performance and was touched emotionally when several of the young chorus members came up to him and visited with him.

Bob started working when he was 10 years old on a newspaper route with the Tucson Daily Citizen, earning 25c per day.

In 1944, he enlisted in the Navy. He served two years during WWII on the Cascade, a destroyer tender in the Pacific, where he and fellow sailors in 1945 sailed to Okinawa and endured the suicide raids and typhoon weather. The Cascade supported the occupation of Japan until 1946 when she sailed for the East Coast and was decommissioned.

After Bob returned home he worked for the Jarrold Drug Co. in Tucson, AZ. Later he was hired by the Brunswick Drug Co., and worked for them for 19 years. After leaving Brunswick Drug Co., he was hired by Ponca Wholesale in Tucson and worked for them for 15 years. During those 34 years he traveled about one and a half million miles.

He was honored as a salesman of the year for Ponca, State of Arizona. While working for Ponca, he and his first wife, Helen, won a trip to Italy.

In 1985, Bob married Shirley Johnson and went to work for the Dave White Municipal Golf Course. During those 20 years he worked for three pro-golfers, helping run the pro-shop.

Bob retired in 2006 and spent many hours working in his yard at home, helping Shirley, and loving his pets, Beethoven, Sammy and Miss Kitty.

Bob and his first wife Helen (deceased) had four living children: Robert H. (Darlene), Ronald (Bonnie), Catherine and one adopted son, Dirl (deceased). One daughter died after childbirth, Rhonda Lee. Bob also has three wonderful stepchildren with Shirley: Nan Marie Robertson, Kathleen Jeanette Wegener and Gilbert Clark Roth Jr. (deceased); eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Robert Baldwin
January 7, 1927 - July 6, 2020

Born in Orlando, FL on January 7, 1927 Departed on July 6, 2020 and resided in Nashville, TN

After 93 years of pancakes and bacon, Robert S. Baldwin died peacefully in his sleep the morning of July 6, 2020 at his residence in Park Manor on Woodmont Blvd. Bob was born January 7, 1927 in Orlando, FL, to Emerald and Lee Baldwin of Titusville, FL. Bobby was predeceased by his parents; sister Marilee (Cliff) Williams of Memphis; beloved daughter Anne Baldwin of Flagstaff, AZ; and grandsons Timothy & Weston Baldwin of Douglasville, GA. He is survived by his firecracker sister Helen Boone of Nashville; sons Dr. Richard "Dick" Baldwin (Donna) of Bluffton, SC, David Baldwin (Melissa Moss) of Nashville; grandsons Patrick Baldwin (Kerri) of Atlanta, GA, Justin Wodrich (Jodie) of Los Gatos, CA and granddaughters Heather Gray of Los Angeles, CA, Lisa Baldwin Lam (Chris) of Charlotte, NC, and Betsy Baldwin of Davis, CA; great-grandson Charlie Baldwin and great-granddaughters Zoe & Zara Wodrich and Sadie & Iris Baldwin.

Bob graduated from Marion Military Institute in 1944. He served in the United States Navy, QuarterMaster Third Class, in the Atlantic and Pacific. He attended the University of Florida (hitchhiking to visit the Florida State College for Women at every opportunity,) Stetson University, and ultimately graduated from the hospitality and restaurant program at Cornell University. Instead of attending commencement, he married the beautiful Jane Mathias of New York City. Following in the footsteps of his grandmother, Florence Baldwin's boarding house and his father's diner, Bob worked in the food industry in Tampa and Philadelphia, before moving to Nashville in 1957.

In 1961, following a handshake with friend Jim Gerding of Gatlinburg, Bob opened a little restaurant called the Pancake Pantry in Hillsboro Village. His goal of good food and good service at a reasonable price was the foundation on which the international icon is still luring lines around the block today. The legendary music business tables pushed together in the back served names known by all, every morning from 7-9:00AM. Bob enjoyed employing his family and numerous other extended family members over the years. All employees were like family; many with decades-long tenure. He was ahead of the times, opening a short-lived second Pancake Pantry location on 4th Ave in Downtown Nashville in 1965. The Pancake Man partnered with his son, David, in 1978 and sold the business to him and retired in 1988.

In retirement, Bob travelled the country in his RV, fishing boat in tow and photographing avian sanctuaries. Bob was a lifelong game bird hunter and wild game chef. He held his anticipated Wild Game Dinner gathering faithfully for 40+ years. More than anything, Bob enjoyed the fellowship of his hunting fellows. Mr. B never stayed away from the Pantry for long, always ready to give free advice and direction. Bob moved himself into independent living at Park Manor in 2014, where he continued his penchant to offer advice and direction.

Bob Baldwin was the perpetual class clown, had an extra helping of humor and wit, and NEVER met a stranger. He loved Nashville and truly felt the love in return. No service is planned at this time. Remembrances are appreciated at https://www.westharpethfh.com/obit/robert-s-baldwin/.

In lieu of flowers, consider donations to the Tennessee Action for Hospitality Fund https://www.cfmt.org/giving-and-investing/become-a-donor/give-to-a-fund/tennessee-action-for-hospitality-assistance-fund/, the Nashville Musicians Association Crisis Assistance Fund http://www.nashvillemusicians.org/covid-19-resources-and-information-musicians, and support your locally owned restaurants! Please be safe, be kind to all, vote, wear a mask, wash your damn hands, and EAT MORE PANCAKES.
